Hi i have followed your instructions but when i try to run from dos box it says quote
sg2 is a illegal command and the game won't load can you give me any help thanks.
Hi I would extract the files one more time just to make sure they are in the right directory. Also double check the autoexec commands for errors as it has to be one of these two that is keeping the game from loading.
Best,
Glenn

What should I do if nothing happens after starting s2g? The cursor is blinking - nothing more. No error message.
Did the cd sg2 command work before that?
Best,
Glenn
Yes, generally dosbox works fine, I can even start Settlers I.
For Settlers II.: cd sg2 is ok, but after entering sg2 and Enter, there is no response.
It sounds like sg2.exe isn't in the folder. Double check and see if it is in the folder. If it extracted somewhere else do a search then drag and drop it back and see if that helps at all.
Best,
Glenn
Strategy Geek I just updated the guide with the new download site thanks for the tip!
Best,
Glenn
If sg2.exe was not in the folder, dosbox would say:
"Illegal command" and would give the prompt back.
In my case dosbox is totally stuck after trying to run sg2.exe
But I gave up already, thanks for helping!
I downloaded s2 from the new download site. It works with it! Thank your for your help!
Hey Glenn,
Thanks for the instructions. However I'm finding that when I double click dosbox, dosbox doesn't play Settlers2, it just shows it's usual self. I did use a different Settlers2 download from the recommended though.

Hi, which site did you download your copy from?
Best,
Glenn
Thanks mate, it worked like a charme on my vista laptop!
Thanks, I've been searching for a while on how to get settlers 2 working but until I found this page No site properly explained it to me.
Works fine expect that I got no sound. Any tips on this problem?
Works fine, except that the audio is missing. Any tips?
just got this running on windows & ult. 64 Excellent XD
Editor won't load, anyway to get this going?
nevermind.
mount c c:\games\settlers2
c:
cd s2g
s2edit
simply adding edit to the last line does the trick in the config \o/
Hi, I've installed follwing the instructions, tried to play this game, and when I click on roman campaign-> play chapter, the game aborts and an error message is displayed: Exit to error: INT: Gate Selector points to illegal descriptor with type 0. How can I solve this?
Regards
Hi Pedro, this could be a specific error with Dosbox 0.73. Dosbox just released Dosbox 0.74 a few days ago with a ton of updates and fixes. I'd try using this version of Dosbox and see if the problem persists.
Best,
Glenn
WORKS PERFECT <<--
I've installed everything as you said but after I complete the first mission on Roman campaign it doesn't unlock the second. Help ?
Hi,
I'm having a problem similar to previous posts. After reading all the posts, it seems like that problem hasn't been resolved; but when I try to run The Settlers II, it just "shows it's usual self" as someone said.
I've tried everything discussed here: I tried different download sites, checked the autoexec code, and I've replaced all the files more than once. How can I get this to work?
Note: I have Oregon Trail and The Settlers I working fine.
Forgot to mention:
I'm running Windows XP.
Guys I don't have any words.
My compliments ... that's the least I can say :)
After 15 years I can play one of my favourite childhood games ever and the taste from that time has been woken up again.
O my ...
You are great!!!
hey!
I have the game running, but when I go to "unlimited play" in the menu and try to select a scenario, the game crashes and says it can't find the maps directory. I've checked and they're there... What do I do?
Hi glenn
i am on the stage of your guide that tells you to - place some text below [autoexec]:
mount c c:\games\settlers2
c:
cd s2g
s2
i have spent hours on trying to find a way to open the config file but theres no ''open with'' option when i right click so i cannot get in and find [autoexec]: :(
please give me some info on how i can compelte the guide to an awsome game i used to spend countless hours on when i was younger - would really appreciate it! - Thanks, Rory
Hi Rory, another quick alternative to creating and editing the dosbox.conf file is using the "Dosbox 0.74 Options" file. You can double click on it and it will bring up all the same settings to edit.
Best,
Glenn
Nice !! IT WORKS !! Thx
No problem, enjoy!

@Anonymous
Use this site:
http://www.myabandonware.com/game/the-settlers-ii-gold-edition-2ag#download
I was havin the same problem as you, this stupid GOG site or whatever they're called is making us pay for it now, but that site above lets you download it for free, and yes, it does work, i made sure before i posted this comment the game was going to work.. After you download it from that site follow the guide and it'll work for ya. Hope this helped.
@Anonymous
I actually just realized that if you use the site he has in bold (Mr. Old Games) you can get it from there for free too, originally when i tried it i couldnt get it to download, but i just now found out that you have to literally click on "Lets download the game".. Dont click on either of the links that are in there with it, it wont download if you do, it'll just take you to another site... Anyways, just thought i'd let ya know. Catch ya later.
