Before the PC game World of Warcraft ushered the MMO genre into millions of households there were three great strategy games that came before it. These games were arguably some of the best strategy games of their time and are a great way to look back on how far this franchise has come, enjoy!
First Download the Free Game Warcraft 2 - Tides of Darkness:
Choose from one of the following sites.

Abandonia : Download Game : Download InstructionsXTC Abandonware : Download Game : Download InstructionsThe House of Games : Download Game : Download InstructionsNext Download & Install the Emulator Dosbox on Windows:
Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)
Next: Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your hard drive in the directory C:\Games\Warcraft2. Simply entering this will create these folders for you.
Next: Open the Games folder then the Warcraft2 folder within it. Locate and click on the Dosbox Options file.
Finally: With the Dosbox Options file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:
mount c c:\games\warcraft2
c:
cd warcra~1
war2
Save and exit the config file when you are finished.
Now Lets Extract The Warcraft 2 Free Game Download:
First: Right click on the Warcraft 2 game file you saved to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".
Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will be asked where you would like to extract the Warcraft 2 files, select "C:\Games\Warcraft2" . When you're done click "Extract" and the Warcraft 2 files will begin to extract.
For the Alliance!:
Double click on the Dosbox program in the "C:\Games\Warcraft2" folder and the game Warcraft 2 will launch. Enjoy playing a Warcraft blast from the past!

Any tips on connecting for multiplayer games in the same house over a home network? It seems the multiplayer was only set up for modems. Is direct cable the only solution? Thanks
Hi apd405, you will want to go with the IPX network option to do it without a modem. I unfortunately don't have more then one computer here at home so I can't test it out but I did find this info on discussion forums that might be useful.

hey i have downloaded an iso file and extracted it to my c:\games\warcraft2. in dos i put
mount c c:\games\warcraft 2
c:
it says that the directory doesnt exist and neither does drive c. got no idea what is wrong.i dunno if i should try mounting the iso either. im using vista.
Make sure about warcraft2... you put warcraft 2... with a space and without it.. check that out.

Hey,it works, and i'm a very happy camper since i couldn't figure it out with my cd install into dos BUT, when i put dos in full screen a nd run the game it crashes,what can i do?
Hi Nonitto, that's weird how it's doing that. Anything you put in the config file should work as it would at the command line and vice versa. All of the commands are on a separate line in the config file right. Otherwise I'm not sure why entering the same commands manually would work but not in the config file.

I followed the instructions, but when I opened dos box it said under cd warc2 that it was "unable to change to: warc2". what should I do?
Hi Jeff, it sounds like the games files didn't extract into the right folder. When it is unable to use the cd, "change directory" command it means that directory doesn't exist within the one that contains Dosbox. I'd give extracting the game files a second try and just double check and make sure the file path given on the guide is the same you use to extract the game.

For people having trouble with playing fullscreen, this worked for me: run dosbox in 640x480 (right-click, compatability, check the box). Fills the screen. You might have to drag the dosbox window a bit, though.
i did everything on the list, but whenever i start up dosbox to play the game, it doesnt automaticly start up. whats wrong?

You computer might have extracted the war.exe file in a different directory. If the commands below don't work let me know where the war.exe file is located.

What does it say when dosbox opens? Does the C: drive mount correctly. Where does the war.exe exist on your drive after you extracted the game files?

it mounts it correctly.. mount c as local directory in C:\Games\Warcraft2\
After mounting, it says illegal command for war..
My war2.exe file exists in the above mentioned folder..
I just did a reinstall to check if any changes where made to their download. The guide works as before. I would copy and paste the mount commands to make sure there isn't any errors.

firstable,I couldn't download the game from your link,but I've had it from torrent ( I don't know if this changes something about installation per se?).
Now,when I try to start the game via Dosbox it just opens the Dosbox and nothing. I don't know if I have to type anything in it to start the game?
When I start the game via WAR2.exe it opens,but I cannot play in a single mode because I don't have CD.
So what do I have to do to avoid this?
Hi Toma, the link to download is on the site it's just not prominent and almost hidden for some reason. After clicking on the icon of the arrow pointing down click on the words "Lets Download the File". It's kind of hidden between two ads he has so it might take a second to spot it.

how do you install it to your computer off the CD?
Hi mjjze87, I unfortunately don't have a CD copy of the game to test but you will need to mount your hard drive and CD-ROM drive and do the install in DOS (Dosbox). I have a guide that shows how to mount your drives to do this:

i did all that and i got the game to install an after it installs in comes up and says type war2 and it work, but when u close out of it and try to go back into it again it says full screen not supported and you got to reinstall it everytime to play the game
It constantly says illegal command. cd warc2 illegal command. war illegal command. It mounts it on the mount c c:\games\warcraft2 but otherwise it wont work. Ive tried mounting it from the CD as well and it wont work either. It says it wont install in DOS when I try the CD.

Hi, I went through the entire Warcraft2 process, and it didn't work. I got a response in the DOS after the c: cd warc2 line saying, "Unable to change to: warc2"
Then, the next line which was c: war
it said, "illegal command: war"....

Thanks a lot! it took me forever to get it tho. i had the same problem with the warc2 not being legil or whatever but thats because i got it from a different source. Anyone to this applies:
You need to go to the designated site and find the warcraft2 game. Then click on the little download arrow pointing down. Then between the two google adds there will be a "lets dowload it" or something.Click on it and you'll start the download. its easy to miss because its not highlighted or anything.

Ok for the people who cannot seem to get the war2 file to work correctly. It will work if you follow the directions using the old guy link. If you use a different download link youlld need to make sure to the directory file is name warc2 for the warcraft game in dosbox.

Hmm, I installed the game (thanks for your guide, helped out a complete idiot like me)the game works perfectly but, there is SFX, but no BGM. any idea what i'm missing ?
I've downloaded the game from Mr. Old Games. I've also set up dosbox and successfully started the game. I can play the single player campaign but when I try and set up multiplayer through the ipx network it gives me a file number 6013 not found. What is the fix for this? I also have the game CD but I am unable to have it run properly through dosbox. Can you help with either problem? Thanks
Hi, the background music is available in the Mr. Old Games copy of the game. Check and see if any of the volume settings are turned all the way down in the Sound Options menu.

I Downloaded Warcraft 2 Tides of darkness, But when i try to move the screen in game, it goes to the other side of the map instantly. I cant move my screen without it going across the map. I have tryed to change the scroll option but it does nothing. Please help me.

I'm trying to compile a notepad collection of the keys to run differen't games since I don't want to have 30 different installations of dosbox on my computer, and I realized that the folders will differ? Since dosbox won't be in that folder with the game. Is this still possible to make run using the

To anyone having an issue with the scroll speed, open the dosbox config file. Open Start Menu, All Programs, Dosbox, Configuration and search for cpu "cycles", it's default is set to "auto". Change it to "20000" and you shouldn't have any problem controlling the speed with the slider now.
My question is can you run a script against dosbox once you have your Tides of Darkness image drive mounted? I'd like a single icon to run this game, without having to enter code each time I play. Thanks.

What if we already have Warcraft 2 installed and we want to get 1? I tried to install Dosbox in a different folder but it still has the same configurations as the other copy.
Hi make sure you create separate config files in each games folder using "config -writeconf dosbox.conf" command. If you use the "Dosbox 0.74 Options" file to save your autoexec commands it applies to any Dosbox you have installed on your hard drive regardless of what folder its in.

btw for those that get an error when starting dosbox the problem 9 times out of 10 will be its not the correct directory path.

im no expert but above is the pathway the dosbox needs to follow to run correctly for example i had a warcraft2 folder in my warcraft2 folder im not sure why maybe i downloaded it wrong.
all i needed to do to set the path directory right is change the name of the warcraft2 folder inside the primary warcraft folder to warc2 & it worked fine.
hope that wasn't too confusing basically its looking for the programs to run in that warc2 folder so make sure it can find them.
now if i can just find the download to beyond the dark portal ill be golden :)
sweet i got the expansion pack Beyond The Dark Portal :) for those that are interested ill explain what i did...
1. downloaded bitlord torrent downloader.
2. downloaded BTDP torrent from thepiratebay.
3. copied the files of the torrent.
4. pasted them & overwrote the tides of darkness files i got from mr old games & this guide.
i kept the dosbox config file exactly the same & vola when i play now it has BTDP campaigns :)

To install the first game i used:
mount c C:\Warcraft2\
mount d F:\ -t cdrom

then made a short cut to play the game. I have an image of the CD and an emulator, when i try to use the same method to install the expansion it doesn't work. any help would be appreciated
Finally figured it out. Changed the folder name from Warcraft 2 to Warc2

When I try to load Warcraft 2 using DosBox (I followed all the instructions) instead of launching the game it does this.

Hi there! first of all thanks for the guides, I can't believe I'm playing warcraft1&2 on windows 7!! I got warcraft 1 working just fine with a config file and all, and I am wondering if there is a way to make a second config for warcraft 2? all I did to make it work was unzip the warcraft2 game into c:\games\warcraft2 and then added a shortcut for dosbox. to get it to run I just type in what you said to put in the config. when i tried to write a new config file it just erased the one I had in c:\games\warcraft

So I've been looking through the posts. And it seems as if you just don't respond to the questions about the game requesting a cd upon selecting single player. Just curious if you don't know how to fix it or what. Game opens fine. The only issue I see at all Is when dosbox is launching it. Glenn, I installed per your instructions for Warcraft 2. When I double-click on my DOSBOX icon in c:games/warcraft2 I get a pink screen that gives me some types of 'credits' screen from a "hybrid.com"

Which program is it in the Warcraft 2 folder that runs the game? there are 4: WAR2, another WAR2, WAR shortcut, and WAR. I ran all of them, the first two coming up with this screen titled "hybrid." the WAR shortcut just says "Invalid file name." and i have to close the application. The final WAR program just opens up DOS and the screen goes black, and it disappears. Help!

I have installed the game and everything works except that there is no speech during the mission briefing and no opening cinematics played and when I click on replay intro from the main menu noting happens. Any ideas?
I followed the instructions but when I finally double clicked dosbox it opened and nothing happened.
I got the game opened but it wont let me play unless I insert the "CD". Please help.

Hello, I have a few questions for you. I don't know if these were answered or not, I don't have time to look through all of the comments...
1. Do we really have to install the games on the C partition?
2. If I want to install more than one game, then how is this done? For instance, you guide says to install the dosbox program onto the C:\Games\name of the game\directory. Can't we install the dosbox into the right folder, such as "C:\Program Files\dosbox" and the games into separate folders and other partitions as well (doesn't necessarily have to be C:\...)?

Hi, yes you can install games on a drive other than the C: drive. All you need to do is change the drive letter in the guide with the one you are using (following the other instructions as before). You can also install more than one game using the methods in this guide.
