First Download The Free Game Simcity 2000:
Choose from one of the following sites.
Abandonia : Download Game : Download Instructions
XTC Abandonware : Download Game : Download Instructions
The House of Games : Download Game : Download InstructionsNext Download & Install the Emulator Dosbox on Windows:
Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)
Next: Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your hard drive in the directory C:\Games\Sim2000. Simply entering this will create these folders for you.
Next: Open the Games folder then the Sim2000 folder within it. Locate and then run Dosbox by double clicking on the Dosbox program icon.
Next: At the the command prompt in Dosbox type "config -writeconf dosbox.conf" and then press the "Enter" key.
Next: Type "exit" to exit Dosbox.
Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.
Finally: With the dosbox config file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:
Abandonia: For those who downloaded the game SimCity 2000 from Abandonia copy and paste the following text:
mount c c:\games\sim2000
c:
sc2000
XTC Abandonware: For those who downloaded the game SimCity 2000 from XTC Abandonware copy and paste the following text:
mount c c:\games\sim2000
c:
cd simc2000
sc2000
Save and exit the config file when you are finished.
Now Lets Extract The SimCity 2000 Free Game Download:
First: Right click on the SimCity 2000 game file you saved to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".
Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will be asked where you would like to extract the SimCity 2000 game files, select "C:\Games\Sim2000". When you're done click "Extract" and the SimCity 2000 files will begin to extract.
Build It and They Will Come:
Double click on the Dosbox program in the "C:\Games\Sim2000" folder and the SimCity 2000 game will launch, enjoy!

all you need to specify is;

it'll work, no need for the cd line
Hi if you installed the game in some different manner (such as installing dosbox in the subdirectory the game is in) this might be possible. However with the install steps listed above you need the change directory command otherwise DOS will be looking for the SC2000.EXE file in the C:\Games\Sim2000 directory which its not in (it's in C:\Games\Sim2000\Simc2000 directory). I tested your mount commands and they don't work with the install process I listed.

I followed the directions exactly, but for me what happened is it created a sim city 2000 folder inside the sim2000 folder... so what I did was cut and paste the files inside the sim city 2000 folder and pasted them in the sim2000 folder and it pretty much started working.

Hi it's ok that it created a folder within the sim2000 folder. I have a change directory command in the commands to account for this so you will be all set.

I had to change the code to
mount c c:\games\sim2000

SC2000
The problem is that I have the wrong video card installed. I will need to locate what is wrong.

Hi are you using the XTC Abandonware copy or one from another site? I double checked and it looks like their download files haven't changed since I wrote the guide. Let me know if you still haven't got it working since writing you post.

i followed the suggestions word for word and then i went to go play the game it says i need to run the setup program in the Win95 directory of the cd to install the application. what can i do to fix this situation?

Hi I just did a reinstall of the game and it runs perfectly with steps specified in the guide. Make sure that you didn't mistype anything including the name of the folder the game is installed in. If you are still having trouble just send over the specifics of what is happening and I'll try to help.

For the colors being inverted I'd try using an earlier version of Dosbox. Also try changing the line in the Dosbox config output=surface to output=opengl or output=ddraw.

after following the instructions, i tried installing the game. "it says this system does not support fullscreen mode. choose 'close' to terminate the application."

when i try to build something only a red box appears on the map instead of the building i am trying to put there. does anyone know why things i build wouldnt be showing up or how i can fix this?
I haven't played Sim2000 in a while but I think that means you can't build in that spot due to terrain etc.

I followed the instructions exzactly but the program wont run when i duble click on dos box, even though im the amidastrator and i right clicked and slected run as amidastrator. It just runs the regulator dos box program. Im runing vista ultamite. Sorry for the louzy typeing.

Hi it sounds like the files from XTC might have extracted incorrectly. I would extract the files a second time and see if that places the folder in the Sim2000 directory which should fix that error.

I am computer illiterate but tried my best to follow the directions. I got all the way to extracting the files but after I extracted the files it only gave me a burn-to-disk icon (I have XP). I then burned it to a blank disc, but have no idea how to get this thing to launch. Very frustrating or did I maybe make a mistake? Any suggestions?
Hi, the burn to disc might be an error at some point. There should be an extract option when you right click did one come up on the list?

Yeah it gave me that option but after I did that nothing occurred. I just had an odd list of files that was "extracted"... I have no idea where to start though when it comes to running it and interconnecting dosbox and the files i downloaded.
ok... disregard previous message, I have everything figured out except the very last step. How do I locate what the file is called to run? For example, sc2000.exe in dosbox? (i made sc2000.exe up as an example) How do I locate that with an XP operating system?

Hi the .exe file for the game will be in the "C:\Games\Sim2000\Sim2000 folder. You can't run that file directly in Windows though so just fire up Dosbox to run it and you'll be all set.

Hi Trena it sounds like the c: drive mounted correctly. At what point do you get an error within Dosbox. Does the "cd sim2000" command go through without an error coming up?

I am experiencing the same problem!! I tried re extracting an all.
Z:\>mount c c:\games\sim2000
Drive C is mounted as local directory c:\games\sim2000
Z:\>c:
C:\>cd simc2000
Unable to change to: simc2000
C:\>sc2000
Illegal command: sc2000.
I installed the game again and couldn't replicate this issue. The error coming up means Dosbox is looking for the folder "simc2000" and it isn't there. This likely means the files got extracted incorrectly. This could be an issue with the extractor you're using or something other than that but I'm not sure what to really make of it. If you can locate the simc2000 folder drag and drop it into the sim2000 folder and that should correct the issue also.

hey i got the cheat codes for SimCity 2000 but i don't no how to enter them into the game!! Can anyone please help me!!!????? One site told me to just type in the cheat codes while I play the game but it won't allow me to type anything! Please HELP!

Hi Glenn, it's me, Miguel again. I have NOW this... problem.
I do EXACTLY as your guide says to install and run Sim City 2000 on my pc, the on i told you i have. But, your guide says that just by starting DOSBox.exe, the game will launch inmediatly... Well, that's not the case for me.
When i wrote the commands to mount c i didn't make any mistake, but, when i open DOSBox, the only thing it does is to remain on the presentation screen where you wrote the command to do the config file, no more. I can't get the idea on how to run the game, so i tried to open DOSBox, and while opened, execute the SC2000 file, and when doing that, the problem of the full screen pops up, but not because it's the fault of DOSBox, it's because i'm dping 2 things at a time, open a MS-Dos file taht obviously doesn't work on Vista and having DOSBox running, but being idle.
So, my friend, what can i do to be able to play this game? I downloaded it from abandonia, followed each link and word to the letter, but no. I can't seem to be able to run Sim City 2000... A little help here???

PS: when asked to unzip the files, i unzip them on the Sim2000 folder, where DOSBox is. When unziped, it doesn't unzip the files, but the whole folder inside the Sim2000. So, i thought that by cutting and pasting all the files of this new folder on the Sim2000 folder would solve the problem, but no. So... i'll wait patiently for your answer ;)

I have followed your instructions to the letter until I get to running the program with dosbox. Am i supposed to click on dosbox program and see a change from before I do the hole: -

Hi I got this game to work, you're instructions were great but everytime I save a game and exit, when I go back my file is nothing but an all blank terrain. Only my money is the same, everything else is gone including scenery. Do you know how I can successfully save anything?

I don't know if you were answering my question, but yea the game works perfectly; I just can't save any game. I save it, and when I go back to pickup the same game, the file loads and everything in the game is gone. There's not even any mountains, water, etc. just a completely featureless tan terrain, only the money is the same as I left it. So do you know what's wrong and how to fix so I can keep playing the same game?

I've installed simcity2000 fine and the game runs great. although the sound effects don't work and the music plays for say 5 minutes and then is absent. I've found I've also had sound problems with other games i've used in dosbox such as syndicate. any help please

I had the same problem with windows 7 32-bit. It only happened when I double clicked the dosbox icon. When I clicked the dosbox icon once, then chose the "open" option at the top left of the screen, it worked!

Yeah i played the game(still cool) but all i hear is music but no sound effects...did i forget to download something or is it really like that?
When i double clicked on simcity2000 at the final step, it wouldnt open. Only when i dragged doxbox into the simc2000 folder, and then dragged the sc2000 application folder into the doxbox shortcut inside the simc2000 folder did it work and open in doxbox. Is that okay? I don't want my computer to be damaged, but it seems I had to play around with it until it worked.

I followed your directions precisely, downloading from Abandonware but the only problem I have is the DOSBox .conf file does not give me the option on right click of "Open with" [XP Professional]. I tried using Properties and selecting Notepad as the programme to use. This however, of course, lost the .conf file type. I downloaded the DOSBox 0.74.0 Win 32 version.
Where I must install simcity2000 in the begin?
isnt this illegal,I dont want to have to get into trouble for doing this I just wanted to play simcity 2000 legally,I just do not want to get into any trouble by doing this it told me the command is illegal and I dont want to have that happen.

After following all introductions DOSBox did not open the games after mounting. I think its becouse Dosbox wants to open a wrong Config file.
So I solved the problem like this:
I opened DOSBox and typed in 3 things:
mount c c:\games\sim2000
c:
sc2000
and it opened the game! Thanks!
To play it at fullscreen press: alt + Enter

the alt+enter combo certainly makes the DOS windows up to full screen (& vice-versa) but in full screen mode I get a big problem: my keyboard is locked up. In DOSbox & SIMCITY2000 I can't SEE WHAT i TYPE & THERE BIS NO CURSOR although when I go back to small window it's all there. I am on a laptop & in simcity2000 the mouse pad doesn't work either in full screen. HAVEN'T TRIED MODIFYING CONFIG FILE but suspect that behave similarly. Am using bwin 7 home premium 64bit
