Hi Steve to mount or load your cd-rom in Dosbox you would use the command:

mount f f:\ -t cdrom

Now you can type f: in Dosbox to access your cd-rom. I can't give specific instructions for the whole process however unfortunately because I don't have a CD-Rom copy of the game.

Best,
Glenn

I don't have a problem with mount. Even though I don't understand what this does. I have already downloaded the dos box. It's the second step that I don't understand. How do I extract the game from my cd rom to a file.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Steve, if it's a zip file on the cd you just need to right click the file and select extract. You can also use the program Winzip as well.

Glenn

When I use dos box if I somehow mess up by not doing it right it won't destroy my computer will it. By the way I went to you tube to find out how to do it. There are some good detail instructions on how to do it that I needed. It's the same thing right. You have a good site but I just can't understand what you are saying. Youtube helps me understand how to do it with video instructions.

I have a new problem. When I did exactly like the you tube video said it all worked. when i typed in install the dos box said i need microsoft windows to install it. I can not run it in microsoft windows. What do I do to install my 1996 loderunner the legend returns pc game??

I also do know how to open up the file from windows to run this file install. But my computer wont install it from windows. It says, "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86(32bit) or x64(64bit) version of the program, and then contact the software company publisher". I have a compatibility program and this doesn't work either. My computer is a dell and I asked them and they said it is impossible because it is not compatible. They might be right. What do you think??

Hi Steve the game will run in Dosbox which works in 64 bit Windows (thats what I use also). However you can't run the game by itself in Windows it needs to run within Dosbox (so you are esentially running a program (lode runner) within a program (Dosbox) ).

Glenn

I now understand what you are saying and I am following your directions. It is easy. The only problem now is with mounting of the hard drive to cd rom dvd.I know what the command is but when I mount the dvd where the game is how do I extract it and put it in the folder where my dos box is?

I was reviewing the previous comments and you already answered my previous question. I can't find the zip file on my cd game. What file am I looking for? There are so many. Do I turn the install file into a zip file and put it with my dos box file?

Steve said...

I looked on the cd and there is no zip file.

When I right clicked on the file. DVD RW Drive(F:)Loderunn. There is no Extract command. There is expand, burn to disc, explore, open, share, format, eject, copy, new which links to a new folder option, properties. What do I do? I should just download the game and forget about my cd rom hard copies. This is becoming very difficult.

Hi Steve, are you running an original CD copy of the game or one from one of the sites in the guide above?

Best,
Glenn

Steve said...

It's an original cd copy of the game from 1996.I have two that I bought from amazon.com. Mad monks revenge and load runner the legend returns.

Hi Steve, I don't have a copy of my own so I can't test what would work. However with the info you gave I would start with these commands.

mount c c:\games\loderunner
mount f f:\ -t cdrom
f:

That will mount any content in c:\games\loderunner as your hard drive and mount your CD-Rom drive as well. When you add and save these commands to the config file open Dosbox. You will be at F:\>, your CD-Rom drive. You can type dir *.exe and press enter to see which programs are on the drive. I hope this helps but I can't give complete instructions because I don't have a copy. Let me know if you need more help I'll try my best with your info to get it working.

Best,
Glenn

thanks but here is the problem. I did all that and it still says I can not run the install program in dos box. It says, "This program must be run under Microsoft windows". I am sorry for bothering you so much but there is nothing I can do. It is not possible. It's better if I download the program and do it that way. I have a compatibility program but this doesn't work either.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Steve, its no trouble at all don't worry about that. It sounds like the CD-Rom edition you have is a later version made for Windows then. It's really difficult to get 16-bit Windows programs working in Vista most of the time so the DOS download is the better bet.

Glenn

So can you please tell me what am I supposed to do now. What action is the best for me to take in order for me to play this version of lode runner??

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Steve, the guide will run you through the entire process. Let me know if you get stuck at any part.

Glenn

Hi Glenn!

I have the same problem as Steve, but the game I'm trying to play is Sid Meyer's Colonization. I have Windows Vista 64 bit and I use DOSBox(version 0.74).

This is the only game Iam trying to play and I have no problems mounting it etc. The only problem I have is that when I try to run "Colonize", I get the message: "This program must be run under Microsoft Windows". But I know I cant do this since the game is from 1994 and not compatible with Windows Vista 64 bit.

Iam DYING to play this game and would be SO grateful for any support I can get! Thanks
