Warcraft - Orcs and Humans Game Free Download & Install Guide

Author: Glenn Scrima

(Please do not copy this guide. However anyone is free to link to this page.)

First Download & Install Dosbox on Windows:

Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)

Next: Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your hard drive in the directory C:\Games\Warcraft. Simply entering this will create these folders for you.

Next: Open the Games folder then the Warcraft folder within it. Locate and then run Dosbox by double clicking on the Dosbox program icon.

Next: At the the command prompt in Dosbox type "config -writeconf dosbox.conf" and then press the "Enter" key.

Next: Type "exit" to exit Dosbox.

Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.

Finally:
With the dosbox config file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:

mount c c:\games\warcraft
c:

Save and exit the config file when you are finished.

Now Lets Download the Free Game Warcraft - Orcs and Humans:

Go To: http://abandonia.com

Next: Type "Warcraft" in the game search box in the upper right corner of the main page and press enter.

After That: Click on "Warcraft - Orcs and Humans" in the game search results column.

Next: On the page that follows click on the "Get It!" button.

Download game
Finally:
Click on the "Get It" button on following page and wait for your browser to give you the option to download and save the Warcraft game. Click the "Save" button and choose a directory on your hard drive where you would like to save Warcraft. Saving to your desktop is usually the default option and is probably the easiest place to save the game Warcraft for extraction.

Now Lets Extract The Warcraft Free Game Download:

First: Right click on the "Warcraft - Orcs and Humans" game file you downloaded to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".

Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will be asked where you would like to extract the Warcraft game, select "C:\Games\Warcraft". When you're done click "Next" again and the Warcraft files will begin to extract.

Now Lets Setup the Game Warcraft - Orcs and Humans:

First: Open the Warcraft folder within the Games folder and double click on the Dosbox program file.

Next:
At the C:\> prompt type setup and press enter.

Now: You will be launched into the Warcraft game installation program. You will first be asked to, "...enter word 1 of line 6 on page 15". Ignore this question by pressing enter.

Next: You will be brought into the main menu. First scroll to the option "Select digitized sound card" and press enter.

Now: You will be brought into the "Select [your] Sound Card" menu. Scroll to the option "Sound Blaster 16/AWE32" and press enter. You will be asked to enter three different settings for this selection. The correct settings are listed below in the order they appear.

Sound Card Port Address: 220
IRQ Number: IRQ 7
DMA Channel: 1

Next: Back at the Warcraft main menu scroll to "Select Music Sound Card" and press enter.

Now: You will be brought into the "Select [your] Music Card" menu. Scroll to the option "Sound Blaster Pro II / SB 16" and press enter. You will again be asked to enter three different settings for this selection. The correct settings are again listed below in the order they appear.

Sound Card Port Address: 220
IRQ Number: IRQ 7
DMA Channel: 1

Finally: Back at the main menu scroll to "Save settings and exit" and press enter. This will return you to the C:\> prompt in in Dosbox, type "exit" and press enter.

One Last Finishing Touch:

We need to quickly head back to the Dosbox config file in the Warcraft folder. Once there open it and again scroll down to the [autoexec] section. We are going to place the command "war" below the commands we originally entered. The final result should look like this.

[autoexec]
mount c c:\games\warcraft
c:
war

Save and exit the config file when you are done.

The One That Started It All:

Double click on the Dosbox program in the Warcraft folder and the game Warcraft - Orcs and Humans will launch, enjoy!

sorry dude. either the download is bad or your instructions are, because it doesn't work. it keeps asking to run setup again. i'm assuming you or a friend posted the ONE comment that said thanx, blah blah blah. please review your instructions and correct them.

Glenn Scrima said...

Cody first of all I didn't post the original comment I think I have better things to do with my time and enough visitors a day to do commenting for themselves lol. Anyway what version of Windows are you using?

I typed setup on the prompt and when I pressed enter it gave me the response: "illegal command: setup"

any solution to this?

Glenn Scrima said...

Are you entering all of the commands manually or did you put them in the config file. Is this coming up as Dosbox launches or as you types them in? Also what OS are you using?

Best,
Glenn

Eric said...

I get it after I type it in. The emulator launches fine and I did the configuration correctly. I type in "setup" then hit enter, then it states that the command is illegal. and I'm not sure what you mean when you ask what OS I have.

Eric said...

Sorry I fixed it. It wasn't working on my laptop because it runs on Windows Vista, I tried it on my brother's computer that runs on xp and it works perfectly, thank you.

hi.... I have a question, is there any way to play this game in windows vista?????

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi, yes the game will work in vista. You will need to be signed in as an administrator though. When running Dosbox right click on the Dosbox program and select "Run as administrator" if you are having trouble.

Hello again, thank you for the answer, The game is running now on my pc, I'd like to make you another question, but it's about warcraft II, I tried to play it but I have the same problem that I had with warcraft I, when I try to run the game there's a message which says that the system doesn't support full screen mode, I know that this is not the subject but I thougth that maybe you could help me with that, or maybe you could open a new post with that subject, anyway, sorry for bothering you, and I expect you can help me...

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi you will need to run the game through Dosbox but also write the correct mount commands for the game. I don't have a copy of the game right now but I'd recommend checking out my guide on how to mount a hard drive and CD-ROM in the FAQ section of this guide. This should show you how to write the correct commands custom needed for the game.

Glenn

Carlos said...

Hi again, thak you for your help, For using dosbox in warcraft II I have to reinstall dosbox in other folder? or can I make it work for warcraft and warcraft II?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Carlos, you would need to install the game in a separate folder something like c:\games\war2 or something similar.

Hi. i tried to follow your directions line for line (im runing windos vista) and when it comes to the time to input setup it tells me its an elegal command. i tried run as admin and it still doesnt work. can you help me???

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Sam, try giving the Dosbox program itself admin access (see FAQ section on how to do this) just in case Vista is denying some programs such as Dosbox this admin access.

i have windows vista and i cant find dosbox, also i do what u say im to do and i save and exit and nothing shows up;nothing happend

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi, the Dosbox program should be located in the c:\games\warcraft directory. If you are having difficulty finding where the Dosbox program is online you can find it at Dosbox.com. Also if you are having trouble with Vista also try checking out my FAQ section there is a help guide for a common issue with Vista. I hope this helps but let me know if you run into any other issues.

I've read all posts and FAQ, but I can't get answer. It keeps saying to use setup over and over. I am using XP.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Debby, did you save your changes in setup for the game. This could cause this to to happen.

Best,
Glenn

debby said...

I did exactly as shown for setup and entered on "save changes and exit"

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Debby, I'm trying to think of what might have caused this since you are using XP and not Vista (which usually has issues sometimes). I'd say go through and try reinstalling the game with a different version of Dosbox, maybe like 0.65 or 0.70. I wrote the guide originally for XP but everyone's setup is different so it could help to try a different version and see if that works. Let me know if this helps.

hey, i have a question, i downloaded warcraft and dos box and everything and when i get to the part where im supposed to open the dosbox and type "setup" next to c:/> it says "Illegal command: setup." what do i do?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi it sounds like Dosbox has no setup file to run and that's why the error comes up. I'd double check the config file commands and maybe do a reinstall of the game in case you installed it in a different folder by accident.

I wonder if I download the dosbox for macOSX. Will I still be able to play warcraft Orcs and Human game on Intel based?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi it is very likely since they make a version for OS X also. I have a few games like Under a Killing Moon running on my Mac with Dosbox. I haven't wrote a guide for OS X yet but I will make this my first one which hopefully I can get out in the coming weeks.

Arggh >.< now it's saying that "war" is an illegal command. Any tips? I had trouble with "setup" being illegal before, but I replaced it with "install" and that worked, so any help for "waar" being an illegal command?

Anonymous said...

Hi Glenn, everything is working until I reach the point where I am supposed to type "setup" at the c prompt. I don't have a "c" prompt, I have a "z" prompt.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi, it sounds like the config file commands weren't saved in Dosbox config file because Dosbox isn't loading them. Head back to the autoexec section of the config file and make sure the commands below are there

mount c c:\games\warcraft
c:

Here's a guide that should help with this if you run into trouble.

hi
can you please show me a picture of where the windows version is in dosox and the right code

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi I'm not sure what you mean by the Windows version in Dosbox. Dosbox will only run DOS versions of a game and not the Windows version which needs to run in Windows itself. The autoexec code above is correct. If you are having trouble double check that errors weren't made during installation and setup of the game.

Hi!

I hope you can help! Can't seem to download warcraft from abandonia. So I would like to download a different game. Should I uninstall, re-download and re-install dosbox again under "C:\games\name of the game I wish to download", or how does it work? Should I download and install dosbox every time I want to download and play a new game? Is there no way that I can create different directories under the dosbox emulator? My dosbox has been downloaded and installed under C:\DOSBox. So where do I go from here? How do I create a folder with dosbox for the new game I will download?

Thanks

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Abandonia goes down from time to time but should be back up within 12 hours. You can install Dosbox once but you would need to type in the mount commands instead of using the config file every time you run the game. The easiest way is to keep all your games in one folder so install each in c:\games\[game name]. If you are running a game I don't have a guide for I have a tutorial that will show you how to do it.

Im on a XP computer, and im getting the problem with the C:\setup , its saying its an illegal command, everything has worked fin up until this point. any help?

Anonymous said...

i dont get it I try and launch the setup in dosbox but it says illegal command....i am also showing a Z:\> prompt...i tried mountin my C:\ but it will not let me insert the "\" char. it inserts "]" in its place....i am so lost.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi John, it sounds like the setup.exe file extracted in the wrong place. I'd try extracting the game zip file one more time and see if that helps at all. If that doesn't work do a search for setup.exe (you'll probably come up with more than one but hopefully it will be in a warcraft titled folder) and let me know where it is located.

Best,
Glenn

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi if it opens to the Z:\> prompt (without errors) the commands in the config file didn't save correctly. Head back to the config file and check if the commands are below the section labeled [autoexec].

Hey Glenn, i found an answer to the people with the setup problem, when it comes up with illegal.. i would make sure you download warcraft from abandonia, i tried it with one from a torrent, and it came up with the illegal command, but i redownloaded from abandonia and it works fine -vista user

Hello I got everything working installed and played but before each mission I swear I remember being dialogue for the mission brief. Is there something I am doing wrong for it to not play. This occurs in warcraft 1 and 2.

William said...

Hey Glenn,

First of all, thanks for taking your own time to help people you don't know enjoy a great game.

I got to the part of the installation where I enter "setup" into the C:\> prompt. Whenever I do, DOS tells me that it is an illegal command. When I try to manually run SETUP.EXE as an administrator, I get the error message "The version of this file is not compatibly with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program."

Thanks for your time.

You've made an old guy pretty happy! Even I could install Doxbox with your directions!
Only thing is full screen. When I change the config file, it goes full screen, too dark to make out much, upper half of word "BLIZZARD" and extremely large fonts in Task Manager (to end it).
If I click "War" in Warcraft folder, instead of clicking Dosbox I get "This system does not support full screen mode." (even with config set at fullscreen = false) At the top of the box it says "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem". This is in a 32 bit Vista PC.
Any pearls of wisdom?

Can you tell me how to get the cheats to work?
I can enter them, but they do not activate.

Later, I shall try to unzip WCII

Am I doing something wrong? I have everything fine until it says, "Run SETUP.EXE to properly cofigure WARCRAFT for your system. I did that. Yet every time I open dosbox it tells me to do it again. I couldn't use the same sound settings as your instructions, but what I did pick gave me no problems in the setup process. I'm not sure if it helps, but I am a vista user.

Nevermind, I just fixed the above problem. I was running the setup from the folder, not dosbox.

hm...every thing SEEMS good, but it seems asking for setup everyime i put it, its saying that nothing is mounted on the C drive, and i see your asking for the OS mostly in this case, i have Windows 7 i had to change the part where you say C:/games/warcraft to C:/old games/warcraft (im too lazy to look it up it might be a slight bit wrong with the C:/ and all that) so ya...any help would be great? Hi glenn, i got a question for you. I got as far as to the setup point. It does show this:

Z:\>mount c c:\games\warcraft
Drice c is mounted as local directory c:\games\warcraft

Z:\>c:

C:>

at this point when i attempt to put in setup, it says:

Illegal command: setup

What do you think i may have dont wrong if the mount is showing as mounted?

My OS is vista and the game is warcraft 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

joe28h said...

that was my post above, but i have figured out what it is. The warcraft file was being saved as a slightly different name then the one issued in your command string for the mount. Once i figured out that it was the command was based on the name for the file you downloaded from your links provided, it worked fine.

I think what is happening is that people are getting the games, realizing they dont work, then go in search of a solution but never change the game file name to your command strings, so thats why it comes up as illegal command, in example what i did and my question in above comment lol

Easiest solution, can the old download and get it from here folks!

Thxs glenn, hope i helped you in return a lil

2- install in c:\dosbox
3- open warcraft folder, double click on install
4- select full installation and press enter
5- in destination directory select c:\dosbox\warcraft
6- next, in the main menu, select exit without saving changes
7- run dosbox
8- type config -writeconf dosbox.conf

10- edit dosbox conf file by adding:
mount c c:\dosbox\warcraft
c:
11- run dosbox, type setup (it works:D)

Hey Glenn this seems pretty straight forward from your description but when I type config -writeconf dosbox.conf into dosbox it either doesn't create the config file or I just can't locate it.

Could you help me out?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi thanks Jack, I don't think the expansion is on any of the abandonware sites that I know of. If you can find a copy online though let me know and I'll write a guide for it.

Best,
Glenn

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Ben, it should be in the same folder the Dosbox program is in after it is created. Another method is to open the Dosbox 0.74 Options file. However the only problem with that method is that if you install another game you will need to change it depending on which game you want to run as its settings apply to all Dosbox use. Another method is the commands can be entered manually as well line by line to start the game. Some people prefer this method if you are familiar with DOS/Dosbox or want to use only one copy of Dosbox to run a bunch of programs at once.

Best,
Glenn
