Author: Glenn Scrima

(Please do not copy this guide. However anyone is free to link to this page.)

First Download & Install Dosbox on Windows:

Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)

Next: Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your hard drive in the directory C:\Games\Warcraft. Simply entering this will create these folders for you.

Next: Open the Games folder then the Warcraft folder within it. Locate and click on the Dosbox Options file.

Finally:
With the Dosbox Options file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:

mount c c:\games\warcraft
c:
cd warcraft
war

Save and exit the config file when you are finished.

Now Lets Download the Free Game Warcraft - Orcs and Humans:

Go To: http://abandonia.com

Next: Type "Warcraft" in the game search box in the upper right corner of the main page and press enter.

After That: Click on "Warcraft - Orcs and Humans" in the game search results column.

Next: On the page that follows click on the "Get It!" button.

Download game
Finally:
Click on the "Get It" button on following page and wait for your browser to give you the option to download and save the file. The file usually saves to the "Downloads" folder or your "Desktop".

Now Lets Extract The Warcraft Free Game Download:

First: Right click on the "Warcraft - Orcs and Humans" game file you downloaded to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".

Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will be asked where you would like to extract the Warcraft game, select "C:\Games\Warcraft". When you're done click "Extract" and the Warcraft files will begin to extract.

The One That Started It All:

Double click on the Dosbox program in the Warcraft folder and the game Warcraft - Orcs and Humans will launch, enjoy!

sorry dude. either the download is bad or your instructions are, because it doesn't work. it keeps asking to run setup again. i'm assuming you or a friend posted the ONE comment that said thanx, blah blah blah. please review your instructions and correct them.

I typed setup on the prompt and when I pressed enter it gave me the response: "illegal command: setup"

any solution to this?

Glenn Scrima said...

Are you entering all of the commands manually or did you put them in the config file. Is this coming up as Dosbox launches or as you types them in? Also what OS are you using?

Best,
Glenn

Eric said...

I get it after I type it in. The emulator launches fine and I did the configuration correctly. I type in "setup" then hit enter, then it states that the command is illegal. and I'm not sure what you mean when you ask what OS I have.

Eric said...

Sorry I fixed it. It wasn't working on my laptop because it runs on Windows Vista, I tried it on my brother's computer that runs on xp and it works perfectly, thank you.

hi.... I have a question, is there any way to play this game in windows vista?????

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi, yes the game will work in vista. You will need to be signed in as an administrator though. When running Dosbox right click on the Dosbox program and select "Run as administrator" if you are having trouble.

Hello again, thank you for the answer, The game is running now on my pc, I'd like to make you another question, but it's about warcraft II, I tried to play it but I have the same problem that I had with warcraft I, when I try to run the game there's a message which says that the system doesn't support full screen mode, I know that this is not the subject but I thougth that maybe you could help me with that, or maybe you could open a new post with that subject, anyway, sorry for bothering you, and I expect you can help me...

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi you will need to run the game through Dosbox but also write the correct mount commands for the game. I don't have a copy of the game right now but I'd recommend checking out my guide on how to mount a hard drive and CD-ROM in the FAQ section of this guide. This should show you how to write the correct commands custom needed for the game.

Best,
Glenn

Carlos said...

Hi again, thak you for your help, For using dosbox in warcraft II I have to reinstall dosbox in other folder? or can I make it work for warcraft and warcraft II?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Carlos, you would need to install the game in a separate folder something like c:\games\war2 or something similar.

Hi. i tried to follow your directions line for line (im runing windos vista) and when it comes to the time to input setup it tells me its an elegal command. i tried run as admin and it still doesnt work. can you help me???

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Sam, try giving the Dosbox program itself admin access (see FAQ section on how to do this) just in case Vista is denying some programs such as Dosbox this admin access.

i have windows vista and i cant find dosbox, also i do what u say im to do and i save and exit and nothing shows up;nothing happend

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi, the Dosbox program should be located in the c:\games\warcraft directory. If you are having difficulty finding where the Dosbox program is online you can find it at Dosbox.com. Also if you are having trouble with Vista also try checking out my FAQ section there is a help guide for a common issue with Vista. I hope this helps but let me know if you run into any other issues.

I've read all posts and FAQ, but I can't get answer. It keeps saying to use setup over and over. I am using XP.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Debby, did you save your changes in setup for the game. This could cause this to to happen.

Best,
Glenn

debby said...

I did exactly as shown for setup and entered on "save changes and exit"

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Debby, I'm trying to think of what might have caused this since you are using XP and not Vista (which usually has issues sometimes). I'd say go through and try reinstalling the game with a different version of Dosbox, maybe like 0.65 or 0.70. I wrote the guide originally for XP but everyone's setup is different so it could help to try a different version and see if that works. Let me know if this helps.

hey, i have a question, i downloaded warcraft and dos box and everything and when i get to the part where im supposed to open the dosbox and type "setup" next to c:/> it says "Illegal command: setup." what do i do?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi it sounds like Dosbox has no setup file to run and that's why the error comes up. I'd double check the config file commands and maybe do a reinstall of the game in case you installed it in a different folder by accident.

I wonder if I download the dosbox for macOSX. Will I still be able to play warcraft Orcs and Human game on Intel based?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi it is very likely since they make a version for OS X also. I have a few games like Under a Killing Moon running on my Mac with Dosbox. I haven't wrote a guide for OS X yet but I will make this my first one which hopefully I can get out in the coming weeks.

Arggh >.< now it's saying that "war" is an illegal command. Any tips? I had trouble with "setup" being illegal before, but I replaced it with "install" and that worked, so any help for "waar" being an illegal command?

Anonymous said...

Hi Glenn, everything is working until I reach the point where I am supposed to type "setup" at the c prompt. I don't have a "c" prompt, I have a "z" prompt.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi, it sounds like the config file commands weren't saved in Dosbox config file because Dosbox isn't loading them. Head back to the autoexec section of the config file and make sure the commands below are there

mount c c:\games\warcraft
c:

Here's a guide that should help with this if you run into trouble.

hi
can you please show me a picture of where the windows version is in dosox and the right code

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi I'm not sure what you mean by the Windows version in Dosbox. Dosbox will only run DOS versions of a game and not the Windows version which needs to run in Windows itself. The autoexec code above is correct. If you are having trouble double check that errors weren't made during installation and setup of the game.

Hi!

I hope you can help! Can't seem to download warcraft from abandonia. So I would like to download a different game. Should I uninstall, re-download and re-install dosbox again under "C:\games\name of the game I wish to download", or how does it work? Should I download and install dosbox every time I want to download and play a new game? Is there no way that I can create different directories under the dosbox emulator? My dosbox has been downloaded and installed under C:\DOSBox. So where do I go from here? How do I create a folder with dosbox for the new game I will download?

Thanks

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Abandonia goes down from time to time but should be back up within 12 hours. You can install Dosbox once but you would need to type in the mount commands instead of using the config file every time you run the game. The easiest way is to keep all your games in one folder so install each in c:\games\[game name]. If you are running a game I don't have a guide for I have a tutorial that will show you how to do it.

Im on a XP computer, and im getting the problem with the C:\setup , its saying its an illegal command, everything has worked fin up until this point. any help?

i dont get it I try and launch the setup in dosbox but it says illegal command....i am also showing a Z:\> prompt...i tried mountin my C:\ but it will not let me insert the "\" char. it inserts "]" in its place....i am so lost.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi John, it sounds like the setup.exe file extracted in the wrong place. I'd try extracting the game zip file one more time and see if that helps at all. If that doesn't work do a search for setup.exe (you'll probably come up with more than one but hopefully it will be in a warcraft titled folder) and let me know where it is located.

Best,
Glenn

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi if it opens to the Z:\> prompt (without errors) the commands in the config file didn't save correctly. Head back to the config file and check if the commands are below the section labeled [autoexec].

Hello I got everything working installed and played but before each mission I swear I remember being dialogue for the mission brief. Is there something I am doing wrong for it to not play. This occurs in warcraft 1 and 2.

William said...

Hey Glenn,

First of all, thanks for taking your own time to help people you don't know enjoy a great game.

I got to the part of the installation where I enter "setup" into the C:\> prompt. Whenever I do, DOS tells me that it is an illegal command. When I try to manually run SETUP.EXE as an administrator, I get the error message "The version of this file is not compatibly with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program."

Thanks for your time.

You've made an old guy pretty happy! Even I could install Doxbox with your directions!
Only thing is full screen. When I change the config file, it goes full screen, too dark to make out much, upper half of word "BLIZZARD" and extremely large fonts in Task Manager (to end it).
If I click "War" in Warcraft folder, instead of clicking Dosbox I get "This system does not support full screen mode." (even with config set at fullscreen = false) At the top of the box it says "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem". This is in a 32 bit Vista PC.
Any pearls of wisdom?

Am I doing something wrong? I have everything fine until it says, "Run SETUP.EXE to properly cofigure WARCRAFT for your system. I did that. Yet every time I open dosbox it tells me to do it again. I couldn't use the same sound settings as your instructions, but what I did pick gave me no problems in the setup process. I'm not sure if it helps, but I am a vista user.

Hi glenn, i got a question for you. I got as far as to the setup point. It does show this:

Z:\>mount c c:\games\warcraft
Drice c is mounted as local directory c:\games\warcraft

Z:\>c:

C:>

at this point when i attempt to put in setup, it says:

Illegal command: setup

What do you think i may have dont wrong if the mount is showing as mounted?

My OS is vista and the game is warcraft 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

joe28h said...

that was my post above, but i have figured out what it is. The warcraft file was being saved as a slightly different name then the one issued in your command string for the mount. Once i figured out that it was the command was based on the name for the file you downloaded from your links provided, it worked fine.

I think what is happening is that people are getting the games, realizing they dont work, then go in search of a solution but never change the game file name to your command strings, so thats why it comes up as illegal command, in example what i did and my question in above comment lol

Easiest solution, can the old download and get it from here folks!

Thxs glenn, hope i helped you in return a lil

2- install in c:\dosbox
3- open warcraft folder, double click on install
4- select full installation and press enter
5- in destination directory select c:\dosbox\warcraft
6- next, in the main menu, select exit without saving changes
7- run dosbox
8- type config -writeconf dosbox.conf
9- exit dosbox
10- edit dosbox conf file by adding:
mount c c:\dosbox\warcraft
c:
11- run dosbox, type setup (it works:D)

Hey Glenn this seems pretty straight forward from your description but when I type config -writeconf dosbox.conf into dosbox it either doesn't create the config file or I just can't locate it.

Could you help me out?

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi thanks Jack, I don't think the expansion is on any of the abandonware sites that I know of. If you can find a copy online though let me know and I'll write a guide for it.

Best,
Glenn

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Ben, it should be in the same folder the Dosbox program is in after it is created. Another method is to open the Dosbox 0.74 Options file. However the only problem with that method is that if you install another game you will need to change it depending on which game you want to run as its settings apply to all Dosbox use. Another method is the commands can be entered manually as well line by line to start the game. Some people prefer this method if you are familiar with DOS/Dosbox or want to use only one copy of Dosbox to run a bunch of programs at once.

Glenn

Hi, it should be possible to connect to each other through the game in Dosbox if you are both using modem to modem connections (56k modem etc). Most computers today don't have a traditional modem built in so using an ipx network over Ethernet may work as well. I used to play Diablo with a friend over the modem back in the 90's so I know this feature works pretty well if there is no unforeseen technical issues. As for an IPX network I have never had a chance to try it but I can point you over to a post I found on Toms Hardware that may help.

Hello. I have a problem. All's good 'till i start playin'. I don't know the word... I don't speak very good english, .... from 2 on 2 it blocks if u understand what i mean. And it's not just on this game. On Red Alert too, on this game but downloaded from oldgames.sk too. I don't know what to do. Can you help me please? My OS is xp sp2. I want to play this game so much because it's my first ever ever game.

tyler said...

Ok, first I was just having one problem... And now I'm having two problems... The first time I tried this step by step, and like a lot of the other commenters, when I got to the setup part I couldn't get it to work because it was telling me "Illegal command: setup." so I decided to just completely start over and try it again in case I messed up somewhere without knowing it, so I redid everything and then when it got to be the setup part again, when I opened DOSBox it wasn't in the "C:\" drive format, like it is supposed to be, and how it was the first time I did it, it was (and still is) in the "Z:\" drive format... I don't know why it's in the "Z:\" drive format now because I did everything EXACTLY the same and I can't get it to change to the "C:\" drive format now.. Do you know why it won't go to the C:\ drive now? And when... or if... I get it changed to the C drive, do you know why it is telling me that it is an "Illegal command"?

tyler said...

**Update**
Well after giving it a few more tries, I got it to mount and change to the "C:\" directory, but the setup thing still isn't working.. It's still telling me "Illegal command: setup."... Any idea why? I am using a Windows XP, plus the the "WARCRAFT" folder that I downloaded and extracted IS inside the other "Warcraft" folder that was made at the very beginning when DOSBox was downloaded.

Ok, by now, anyone reading this is prrroobably gunna think I'm completely retarded, for posting 3 commments within an hour, but I got the setup thing figured out now too. First I'll tell you what my Warcraft folder looked like before I got it working, here is everything that was in the folder after following all of the steps up to the "setup" part:
(1) - Documentation (Folder)
(2) - Video Codec (Folder)
(3) - WARCRAFT (Folder)
(4) - DOSBox 0.74 Manual (Text Document)
(5)- DOSBox 0.74 Options (Batch File)
(6)- Reset KeyMapper (Batch File) (7)- Reset Options (Batch File)
(8)- Screenshots & Recordings (Batch File)
(9)- uninstall (Installer)
(10)- dosbox (CONF File)
(11)- DOSBox (Emulator)
(12)- SDL.dll (Application Extension)
(13)- SDL_net.dll (Application Extension)
(14)- DATA (Folder)
(15)- DRIVERS (Folder).
Here is what I did to get it to work:
1) Go into your "Warcraft" folder
2) Open the "WARCRAFT" folder
3) Highlight everything that is inside that folder, and drag it into the "Warcraft" folder.
4) Your "WARCRAFT" folder will now be empty, and you should now have 24 different things (folders, batch files, etc.) in your "Warcraft" folder.
5) Now go into your DOSBox emulator again, and type "setup" and hit Enter.
It should now work, and you can now follow the rest of the guide. Hopefully this worked for everyone else like it did for me, if not you can contact me with any questions you have at tflo95@hotmail.com

Tyler said...

@Anonymous
You might want try redownloading it off of the site... If there's nothing to extract though, it probably already extracted everything to the "Warcraft" folder, assuming that's where you told it to extract to.

First of all i want to say great tutorial Glenn, but i got the same problem as many others with the "setup thing", so i did what tyler said and moved all the files from WARCRAFT to Warcraft. but when i now type in setup in dosbox this message comes up "The PC WARCRAFT setup utility must be run from the directory which contains the subdirectory: DRIVERS". Anyone know what to do?

bryan said...

Is this the FULL version or trial? the copy I got elsewhere is only a demo. wants me to purchase the whole one.

ryan said...

hey, im sure your gettin tired of this question but im at a loss. please help. i followed all the instructions to a tee but when i get to the set up part it says illegal command setup. is it because im running windows 7? if so ho do i get around this issue?

San90 said...

For ryan:

Here is what you have to do for the setup problem:

1) Go into your first "Warcraft" folder
2) Open the second "WARCRAFT" folder (with the warcraft stuff in it)
3) Highlight everything that is inside that folder, and drag it into the first "Warcraft" folder (where there is the DOSBOX).
4) Now IN THAT FOLDER CLICK THE BOSBOX AND and type "setup" and hit Enter.
It should now work.

I've also downloaded the BOSBOX v.072 because the other version didn't work. bye

san90 said...

FOR SEV:

Yup I had the same problem. Download the other version

DOSBOX V.0.72 and follow all the direction including the setup one I've put as a comment. Mine finally started.

Andy here..

okay I downloaded everything so on and so forth I moved the files from the WArCrAFT folder in to the Warcraft folder, solved the setup problem (FINALLY) however, I went and made the war under the previous files, and now.. what do I have to press in order to start playing? I clicked on every option giving and the game didn't start.. :- /

I love this game and been trying in the past few days to intal in on my laptop (I'm suck at computer). Finally I got everything and had the game running. Thanks heap for everything.

One problem though: when I closed the game and restart later, I clicked on the Dosbox and I have the C prompt only, when I typed war, then warcraft ... it kept saying illegal command. What should I do to play it again?

Again, thank you very much for your help and wish you and your family a peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.

For error regarding drivers, copy drivers into same folder as the setup exe in the same way as you move the warcraft folders into the dosbox folder.

Hi Glenn, thanks for the guide, I follow the instructions on the config fiel to the letter and still get the Z: instead of C, any ideas? here is the entry from my config file:

Dear Glenn,
I must have spent hours trying to get this game to work. But your method made it so simple I got to work in 30 mins. Thank you for spending the time to write this. I'm getting addicted to this game now!

I was also having the illegal command: setup problem. turns out the problem was I unzipped the warcraft files into c:\games
warcraft\WARCRAFT
and WARCRAFT is the folder they came in. once I moved the contents of WARCRAFT to the main folder (c:\games\warcraft) it all worked fine!

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure if this question has been answered. I installed my Warcraft directly from my CD. Then moved everything to the Games\Warcraft directory. The game boots up perfectly. But when I try to start a game it keeps asking me to insert the CD. The CD is in the CD slot it just doesn't work. Any help. Also send a reply to louieu1@lycos.co. Thanks.

I fallowed your instruction exactly, and it didn't work. It still says z:\ instead of c:\. I have retried at least 10 times and all end up the same way. I have the conf file and have the text properly written at the bottom of the file, what is wrong!?!

Glenn,

hello, i'm having some trouble with the setup illegal command. I downloaded and updated the dosbox config file as per above. I have the original cd so I did a straight copy and paste into the c:\games\warcraft folder.

I thought I had windows vista and apparently it's windows 7. Does this work with this download? when i go to type in 'setup' it says illegal command and I wanted to check. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

I had the same problem with the setup - illegal command

Tried the DOSBox version .72 (was using .74)
Still no luck :(

Scanned the comments and saw another post where a kind Samaritan suggested opening the First Warcraft folder and subsequently opening the second (inner) Warcraft folder and dragging the contents of that inner folder into the body of the first(outer) folder (where the DOSbox Icon is)...had to change the name of the inner Warcraft folder (I was too nervous to delete it but probably would have been okay after dragging out all of the contents.....)
Retried and NO setup error!! THANK YOU GLENN!

Hope this help any that come behind me!

tanx a lot for this great game from the "other days".
It took me a while to get acces: the unzipper placed the entire map called Warcraft in the c:\Games\warcraft directory. I had to move the warcraft files from the map, one step up, into c:\games\warcraft
I run on vista.
After some puzzling I found the way to adjust the screensize, in the DOS surrounding.
Many tanks again. Greets from holland.

Glen...THANK YOU!
After stumbling across your site I got renewed hope in a long lost wish...to play my old game of Warcraft again.
Your step by step approach was extremely helpful. I had problems initially because some files were placed in another file in spite of my following your instructions. Instead of "c:\games\warcraft" they ended up in "c:\games\warcraft\warcraft" and I only discovered that because I tediously read through the comments that others had left you. It was your idea of doing a computer search of "setup.exe" files that I saw it listed as such. So then it was a matter of moving them from the 2nd warcraft file into the first. The search was relatively quick on my new notebook which has Windows 7 as the OS/Operating System.
After that initial frustration I held my breath and finished off your instructions and soon found myself playing my favorite game after 15 years...THANKS AGAIN!
P.S. Now I gotta try to find another classic called Vikings which seemed to run through DOS too but Im not an expert :)

Hi
I'm using Win7 Pro and followed all your Instructions but when I enter setup it goes on and says: illegal command setup
What can I do?

Morat said...

You can also use D-Fend Reloaded

http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net

which is a front-end for DOSBox. I tried just downloading Warcraft and pointing at it from within D-Fend Reloaded, and it ran immediately. If D-Fend knows the game, it'll automatically set it up and run it, you don't even have to unzip the download.

Morat said...

BTW, Alt-Enter toggles between windowed and full-screen (DOSBox).

Here's the other key commands for the game -

Pause
This Pauses the game (ON/OFF) and the menu bar is still active

Location (Option+F1-F4)
This saves the current Command Map game play position.

Recall Location (F1-F4)
This centers the Command Map on a saved game play location.

Mini Map (F5)
Turns on the Mini Map from any other screen.

Unit Screen (F6)
Lists all units in play and units destroyed.

Economy Screen (F7)
Lists total resources harvested.

Score (F8)
This gives an indication as to your rank and victory conditions.

ADDITIONAL KEYS / MENUS
G = Hold this key down to show the construction grid.

Click & Dragging the mouse = Selects up to four units at once.

+, - = Increase or decrease game speed during play.

Esc = Cancel any command just issued in any menu.

the illegal whatever command when trying to execute setup is solved by copying the contents from c:/games/warcraft/warcraft to c:/games/warcraft

i tried right clicking dosbox and selecting to run as admin and run as windows xp sp2 and that didnt help... but copying the files did

Whenever I try to extract warcraft it always says "no files to extract, folder is empty" I found the same post to you on October 5 2011. Your answer was redownload or they are already extracted. I have redownloaded many times to 3 locations. Always the same pop up when I click on extract all. It doesn't give you a chance to do anything or direct it . Any new ideas?

Anonymous said...

A couple of things that may help some issues.

If typing "setup" yields a "illegal command" message, try typing "cd\warcraft" and entering that first, then try "setup". A quick entering of "dir/w/p" will display a list of executable commands, and [Warcraft] means entering a "cd\Warcraft" will bring up the executable setup command for it.

Next, for those having issues with the mount location not being recognized, make sure that the mount location typed in the config file (in this case "C:\Games\Warcraft") remains correct. In other words, if the folder is moved somewhere else, say to the desktop or another folder for easy access, then THAT new location must be used for the mount. The full location data should appear at the top of the folder, and that is what should be mounted.

I hope this helps some of you. Enjoy, God bless, and smile as you slay some orc (or human)! :D

For anyone having problems with the "setup" part of this, scroll back up through the comments and look for my comment that I posted on how to fix it. Using the same name as you see for this comment, so just look for "tyler" then follow the directions. 100% guarantee it will work for ya. Goodluck.

tyler said...

Also, when you are following my steps, make sure to move EVERYTHING out of the WARCRAFT folder. COMPLETELY clear out the WARCRAFT folder. That includes any other folders that are within the WARCRAFT folder, so the "DRIVERS" folder,"DATA" folder, etc. Just drag those folders into your original "Warcraft" folder when you are moving everything else out of the WARCRAFT folder, so that everything in that folder goes with it and you don't have to do it one at a time.

I just followed his steps on the sound part of it (which was what it was all already set at) and it worked for me... Could be cause you have windows 8, im not sure, I have windows 7 so i couldn't tell ya if that's why or not
