Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.

Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will be asked where you would like to extract the Cannon Fodder game files, select "C:\Games\CFodder1". When you're done click "Next" again and the game files will begin to extract.

Next: With everything now configured correctly scroll down to "Exit" in the "Main Menu" and press enter.
Now: You will be back at the C:\> prompt in Dosbox. Type "exit" and press enter, this will close the Dosbox program.

One Last Finishing Touch:
We need to quickly head back to the Dosbox config file in the CFodder1 folder again. Once there open it and again scroll down to the [autoexec] section. We are going to place the command "cannon" below the commands we originally entered. The final result should look like this.
[autoexec]
mount c c:\games\cfodder1
c:
cd cannonf
cannon
Save and exit the config file when you are done.

Double click on the Dosbox program in the CFodder1 folder and the game Cannon Fodder will launch, have fun!

Hi, I followed all your steps but I got a message saying "file not found new_adl.bin"
Any ideas where I'm going wrong?
thanks!
Hi SJM, which version of Windows are you using?
Best,
Glenn
Just thought I'd add that I couldn't get Cannon Fodder running at an acceptable framerate until I changed the output mode to opengl.
Thanks so much. This is awesome. One of my favorite games ever.
Thanks Mighty and thanks for the tip. I hope this will help anyone having similar issues, it's a good way to boost performance with the right system.
Best,
Glenn
Hi just to say that I got as far as typing install in dos box, when it told me it was an illegal commqnd. Using vista (and Cannon fodder 2 as there was a virus in CF1)
help!
Hi Callyc, do you know if you are running Vista in Administrator mode? If not this often causes issues with running games in Dosbox. I put a link below on a guide showing how to fix this if this turns out to be the case.
I have seen issues on Abandonia's forums of people reporting viruses being found in games and after it's discussed it almost always due to issues with virus software and the age and type of game files used. Abandonia is a very reputable and large site which functions on using their own game files (these aren't pulled off of limewire or something like that) so this shouldn't be a concern. Let me know if this helps.
Best,
Glenn

Hi Glenn - am segned in as administrator, and have tried giving dosbox administrator rights - still same problem.

Neilperle

Hey, got as far as downloading cannon fodder, but the "download this game" link is gone! any alternatives?
Hi thanks for making me aware of this. This is one of the older guides on the site and it looks like Abandonia took their copy down. You can download the game from XTC Abandonware however. The only difference will be that the first set of autoexec commands you add to the config file will be:
mount c c:\games\cfodder1
c:
cd cannonf
I'll try to upgrade this guide as soon as possible to make these changes more accessible to everyone searching for this game.
Best,
Glenn
hi, ive actually got the game to work but without sound which is quite frustrating, when i type install into the c:\> so i can configure the sound options it says invalid command?
Hi it sounds like the file isn't in the C: directory if Dosbox gives that error message. Did you install the game in a different folder before you ran it?
Best,
Glenn
Hi Glenn
Can I just say thank you for an extremely helpful and useful guide. It's wonderful.
Unfortunately I came across the same problem as a previous poster in that Abandonier no longer offer it to be downloaded and I had to do so from XTC Abandonware and use cd cannonf in the config DosB. I managed to get to the configure section, although I wasn't able to change the first option from 5 to 7 (just didn't let me do this) and music option only stated 'adlib', so I had to choose that.
Anyway, I am now unable to play the game by double-clicking on DosBox icon (just get the command screen). I have tried changing the config file from cd cannonf, to cannonf, to cannon and with no joy at all. Do you have any suggestions? I am with the dreaded Vista by the way if that helps.
Also, I do actually have the game as I'd hoped by some miracle it would let me play it! I haven't been able to find anywhere to explain how to get my game to run on Vista though, which is why I tried downloading the stuff from XTC as suggested here.
With very many thanks.
Hi Silverbird welcome to the site! I just did an overhaul of the guide so it should fix the issues you mentioned. Let me know if you run into any problems though.
Best,
Glenn
Hey, great guide, definitely made it easy for me to understand how to get Dosbox working. Once I try to load the game, though, I get the title screens, and then an error:
File not found - inglad100.mid
Any ideas? Running Windows XP
Thank you so much, Glenn!
I've got it working now! The graphics aren't very good and I can't remember the keys, but it's all good. I can't remember if the graphics were always like this though - probably! I've gotten used to the graphics nowadays. Scary how far things have come.
Thank you ever so much for this wonderful guide and especially for updating it. I really appreciate it and it's ever so kind of you.
Jenny
Hi Matthew, it sounds like you might have extracted the game files into the wrong folder. Are you using the files from XTC Abandonware or another site?
Best,
Glenn
No problem Jenny, thanks for pointing out the guide wasn't working anymore. Ya graphics have changed quite a bit and it can really make the old stuff look a little dated graphically. The game also runs in VGA which was great at the time but today's monitors run at such a larger resolution that it makes the old stuff pale in comparison. Still a great game though. Have fun playing it again!
Best,
Glenn
Hi, I've followed your instructions upto here:
Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.
However I can't see the 'open with' option.
Please advise, thank you.
will this work on windows 7?
many thanks
