First Download & Install Dosbox on Windows:
Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category).
Next: Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your hard drive in the directory C:\Games\CarmenWorld. Simply entering this will create these folders for you.
Next: Open the Games folder then the CarmenWorld folder within it. Locate and then run Dosbox by double clicking on the Dosbox program icon.
Next: At the the command prompt in Dosbox type "config -writeconf dosbox.conf" and then press the "Enter" key.

Next: Type "exit" to exit Dosbox.

Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.
Finally: With the dosbox config file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:
mount c c:\games\carmenworld
c:
carmen
Save and exit the config file when you are finished.

Finally: Click on the "Get It" button on following page and wait for your browser to give you the option to download and save the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego game. Click the "Save" button and choose a directory on your hard drive where you would like to save it. Please help ASAP. Sound is not working in Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? with Dosbox on a Windows Vista laptop.
Hi Katie, Vista is the king of compatibility issues (you might have run into a few using it) with a lot of brand new hardware/software so all of us classic gamers end up getting stuck in this same spot. I don't have Vista on hand and the guide was only written for XP (I'm going to be adding Vista editions for all my guides when I make the switch) so I don't have a fix I can give you at the moment. But I have a link I listed below that might help. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Hi Glenn, I am running Vista on a Core 2 Duo 1.6 ghz processor with 1 gb ram and 160 gb hard disk.
I was able to play Carmen Sandiego with no problems. I had problems quitting the DOS BOX though. I had to do CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then close the DOSBOX windows.
Thanks for the navigations.
Hi, after you exit the game and end up back at the C:\CarmenWorld> prompt, type exit and press enter. This will exit Dos and close Dosbox for you.

So how do I configure Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? I setup Dosbox accordingly with all the correct files, but when I went to download ..Carmen Sandiego.. it didnt give me the option to extract files and already had Dosbox applied to it. What do I need to do to play this game now?
Hi Jeshunter, if you don't see the extract file listed when you right click on the game folder you downloaded another way is to download a unzip program like winzip. You can find programs like this on the download file sites like download.com some are better than others but winzip is a popular choice. Once you run the program just unzip the file to the game folder and follow the remaining instructions after that step and you should be all set.
Best,
Glenn
Dude you rock. Haven't played this in years and have been trying on and off for a long time to get it working for me. And then one day along came Glenn's Guide and the 1980's are back!!! Thank you once again.
Shindy =0)
Thanks Shindy this was one of the games that sticks out in my mind as well from that era. Have fun playing it again!

Glenn
oh my gosh you are so great. thanks..!
Have fun playing this old classic!

this is awesome. i have been trying for hours to get it to work. but i was wondering if you could get a newer version of it to work...i always played the one where you can make a profile of the crook and it has better graphics...is this possible?
Hi which version are you thinking of? Is it an updated version of this game or another Carmen Sandiego game? I have a bunch of other Carmen Sandiego games on the site if that was what you mean. I also have a guide that shows you how to use the basic features of Dosbox as well if you need some help with a newer version.

love this game. would it be possible to install this game on a pocket pc 2003? how can i do that? thanks.
Hi I have never tried it but it seems it is possible. I did a google search "dosbox pocket pc" and the first two hits are sites offering a download for a modified Dosbox emulator.
Best,
Glenn
thank you
Welcome to the site! Enjoy the game!

Hi,
I can't seem to find the Dosbox config file in the Carmen World folder that I made? Dying to play some good old Carmen, I remember getting so close to finding her but then we upgraded to an XP and I never found out what happens!

Please help ASAP. I downloaded DosBox and the Where in the U.S.A is Carmen Sandiego, however when I open DosBox to play the game it says that it's an illegal command:carmen, what should I do to play the game? I have a Windows Vista laptop
Please help ASAP. I downloaded DosBox and the Where in the U.S.A is Carmen Sandiego, however when I open DosBox to play the game, it says that it's an invalid command:carmen, what should I do? I have a Windows Vista laptop. Please help me if you can.
Thank you very much.
Hi Natasha, it sounds like the mount commands might be mistyped when you put them in the [autoexec] section of the config file. It might also be that the game zip file was extracted in the wrong folder. Do you see the game files in the same folder as the Dosbox program is before you open it? Also what does Dosbox say sbovr this error message in Dosbox ? Is the C: drive shown as mounted correctly?
Best,
Glenn
I checked the mounting commands and everything was right because once I open DosBox it says that it was mounted to drive C: also when I extracted the files all the game files were there as well in the same Games/CarmenSandiego folder, so I don't know what else could be wrong with it, what do you think I should do?
Hi, I finally got it I downloaded the game once again and it worked now. Thanks for your help
Hi Glenn,
I have the cd 'Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time' which is the 1999 cd.
I also bought a Del laptop with Windows Vista already installed.
I am wondering how i would go about using Dosbox to install and play this disk?
it would mean alot if you could help me.
thankyou :-)
I installed everything according to directions, but when I open us DOSBox, the game never launches. Any suggestions?
Hi, I followed all instructions completely. I have windows vista but when I double click the dosbox program it doesn't run the game. Can you help? it would be appreciated.

Mariela check out this guide for that issue.

Jenny H., I don't have a copy of that game but I have a guide that will show you the steps to get the game running.

Best,

To Anonymous, it sounds like the mount commands in the dosbox.conf file didn't save correctly. Head back to the config file and see if all the commands are below [autoexec] also if they are make sure there isn't any errors in the commands you copied there.
Best,
Glenn
i have followed all the instructions and i still cant get it to run. when i double click on dosbox it comes up with the command screen. help.
Hi is the C: drive mounting in Dosbox?
Best,
Glenn
I have vista and I followed the directions exactly, except it keeps saying c: isn't mounted. Also, my game folder is called "My Games" instead of "games." I thought this might be the problem, but even entering it as c:\mygames\carmenworld doesn't work. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks
When I went to the http://abandonia.com
website, and typed in carmen sandiego, there were no results found.
Nevermind that last post.
Now my issue is that I followed all the directions, and when I doubleclick on the dosbox icon in c drive carmen folder, the command box comes up, and the game does not launch. How do I fix that?
Hi,
I may have done something wrong with the installation but after I finished installing, double clicked on the DOSbox to play, and it asks me to put in a command. What should i do?
Deb
Hi Deb, does the game load in Dosbox or are you at the C:\> prompt?
Best,
Glenn
I followed each step, but when I double-click the dosbox application, nothing happens except two promt windows open, but the game doesn't start.
I'm runnin on an Acer laptop with Windows 7 ... does anyone have any advice? It would be very much appreciated!! ^_^
Hi Kas, when Dosbox opens does it show the C:> drive or Z:> and do any error messages come up above this prompt?
Best,
Glenn
Ummm, it's opening with "Z:\>" if that makes any sense.
And there's no error messages above it, only
"Z:\>SET BLASTER= A220 17 D1 H5 T6"
And thanks for replying so fast! ^_^
Hi Kas, double check the config file and make sure the commands below [autoexec] saved correctly. The info you gave me means these commands aren't loading when Dosbox is launched.
Best,
Glenn
Hi Glenn,
Thanks so much! I've been wanting to play this game for YEARS.
I'm having the same problem as Kas with the same message when starting up Dosbox. However my "Z:\>SET BLASTER= A220 17 D1 H5 T6" has been there from the beginning of setting up dosbox.
I've checked the config file and [autoexec]saved correctly.
Help!
I have a windows vista operating system if that helps?
Thanks so much.
Coco
Hi Glen
I cannot get the config file to come up and have checked the exact wording and spacing of the command - I have windows vista - is it worthwhile to download carmen anyways?
thanks
Amy
Hi Coco, if the commands are saved correctly the only other thing I can think of is when you created the config file you might have mistyped the name and extension for the file and that is why Dosbox isn't recognizing it. Double check to make sure the file extension is .conf and the entire file is dosbox.conf . Let me know if this helps at all.
Best,
Glenn
Hi Sebastain, if you are having trouble with the config file an alternative is you can also type in the commands at the Z:> prompt that are in the [autoexec] section one line at a time. It takes a bit more time each time you play the game but works the same way also.
Best,
Glenn
Works on my mac osx snow leopard, no razzle no dazzle no razz mattaz
Hey Glen, I really wanted to thank you for the post.. i cant believe im gonna finally be able to play carmen again after almost 2 decades. thanks a ton for this post. really helped me.
Do you have or know where I can find this version of Carmen Sandiego below?
I recall a floppy drive version that you could dial a travel agent to take you to your locations and you had (RoboCop) who would assist you with the arrest.
The sound actually used realistic instruments and there was a second bonus CD that had a Carmen encyclopedia.
The travel agent was funny but I could never remember what she said.
Hi Anirudh, no problem enjoy the game!
Best,
Glenn
Hmm don't recall playing that version of the game. Your best shot might be a physical copy, ebay's the best for picking up stuff for cheap or if you have a really good flea market or used games store that might be worth checking too.
Hi Glen, I have followed all instructions. Now when I open dosbox.exe, it says "Unable to open ACME roster file". Any ideas how to solve this? I have Windows 7.
Hi Glenn,
I have followed all of the commands that it said to do and when I try to open up the game and black screen comes up for about a second and then goes and nothing happens.
Yeah, I downloaded and followed all the instructions as well and when dosbox opens, it has the same instructions as it did before I configured it...
I have Windows 7... Not sure if that has anything to do with it?
please help. i did everything right and even checked when that didnt work i delete everthing and did it again. tried to open dosbox and the game wouldnt open this is what dosbox tells me
Z:\>SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 T6
Z:\>mount c c:\games\carmenworld
Drive c is mounted as local directorry c:\games\carmenworld\
Z:\> c:
c:\> carmen
Illegal command: carmen

hi.im trying to run where in the world is carmen sandiego using vista.i followed all ur instructions but when i right click on the dosbox and run as admin,it just says drive c doesnt exist.and when i try to mount games\carmenworld\ it says drive c is mounted as local directory.then,i typed c: and dir and several programs appear.when i try to type dosbox exe, it says program cannot be run in dos mode.what do i need to do coz i really want to play the game?tnx
Hello Glenn
ah....how can I put this.....
I followed your instructions like you said but when I open the dosbox.exe it says:
- Illegal command: carmen
*Note: Just in case, yes I extracted the zip file into the "C:\Games\CarmenWorld"
therefore the folder "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" is there....so, what would you recommend me?
*Note: Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you...I'm using a Linux S.O.(ubuntu 10.4)
Hi Otto, unfortunately I have almost no experience with Linux. Is this error coming up after the c: drive mounts in dosbox?
Best,
Glenn
The game works fine for me. The only problem is, it asks questions at the end of each case and you have to reference from a Desk File or Encyclopedia. How do we get past that or is it a missing file in the zip folder?
Hi! I've been wanting to show my boyfriend this game for ages but haven't been able to download it correctly. I tought I'd give it a go again with your tutorial because it seemed very clear, but had some doubts it would work because I have Windows 7 and do not understand at all how to install things.
I've done everything you said and checked the config file. An important change is that my games folder is called C:\Users\Aralais\Saved Games, but I used the same name for every step of the tutorial. I am writing from Mexico and don't know if that makes any difference.
Well anyway the problem is that dosbox seems to be having issues recognizing my C:\ unit because it says
Z:\>c:
Drive C does not exist!
You must mount it first. Type intro or intro mount for more information
Z:\>carmen
Illegal command: carmen.
I don't know what to do! Help!!
-Ana
thanx. I thought, i'll never see the older games, which i used to play for days and nights...

Is it possible to get the 1996 version to work on Vista?
I have downloaded a copy to do a test run on my Vista 64 bit since I am going to buy it for the older Windows 2000 computer in the bedroom either way.
Ummmmm.....It is not working for me either. Here is my autoexe for the .conf file:
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
# You can put your MOUNT lines here.
mount c c:\games\carmenworld
c:
carmen
It does not work. Getting what kaz got. Help please.

Hello, I get to the stage where you open dosbox in notepad, however after I type in the "mount c etc.." it won't let me save when I try. Anyone experience this?
Hi I followed your instructions to play Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, I'm running Vista, and it all works fine. I downloaded two other Carmen games (America Past and Where in the USA) do I just do exactly the same thing? Can you have more than 1 Carmen Game at a time? I just down't want to screw up the original. Can you let me know? Thanks! Emmie
SO COOL! I love it!
Abandonia isn't working to download the "Where in the world" version. Any other sources to get the game? Thanks
Hi Glenn! Im having an issue.. it says there are no files to extract and that the zipped file is invalid or corrupt??
Thanks so much for the clear directions for downloading this game. I remember years ago playing this game for hours. Definitely brought back some good childhood memories! Thanks Again!!
Thank you so much! This is was one of my favourite games. Your instructions where so clear and easy to follow. I had it downloaded and installed in around half an hour. Cheers!
Hi Glenn,
I'm using Windows 7 and a msg promps: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 or x64 version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.
Anything I can do or is it just too out dated?
