Quest for Glory I (1) - So You Want to Be a Hero PC Game Free Download & Install Guide: Windows XP & Windows Vista (Using Dosbox Emulation)

Author: Glenn Scrima

(Please do not copy this guide. However anyone is free to link to this page.)

First Download & Install Dosbox on Windows XP or Windows Vista:

Go To: > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)

Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your hard drive in the directory C:\Games\QuestFG1. Simply entering this will create these folders for you.

Open the Games folder then the QuestFG1 folder within it. Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.

With the dosbox config file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:

mount c c:\games\questfg1
cd questf~1

Save and exit the config file when you are finished.

Now Lets Download Quest for Glory I - So You Want to Be a Hero:

Go To:

Next: Type "Quest for Glory I" in the game search box in the upper right corner of the main page and press enter.

After That: Click on "Quest for Glory I - So You Want to Be a Hero" in the game search results column.

Next: On the page that follows click on the "download this game!" button.

Finally: Click on the "Get It" button on following page and wait for your browser to give you the option to download and save the file. Click the "Save" button and choose a directory on your hard drive where you would like to save the zip file. Saving to your desktop is usually the default option and is probably the easiest place to save the file for extraction.

Now Lets Extract The File:

First: Right click on the "Quest for Glory I - So You Want to Be a Hero" file you saved to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".

Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will be asked where you would like to save the extracted files, select "C:\Games\QuestFG1". When you're done click "Next" again and the files will begin to extract.

The Quest Begins:

Double click on the Dosbox program in the "C:\Games\QuestFG1" folder and the game Quest for Glory 1 will launch, enjoy!

The config file is missing what do I do?
The game won't run on Windows Vista. What should I do?
The game runs sluggish. Is there a way to improve this?
How do I make the game launch in fullscreen mode?
How do I change the amount of RAM available?
How do I mount a hard drive or CD-ROM drive in Dosbox?
How do I change my machine type in Dosbox?
How do I capture a screenshot during gameplay?
I can't download from Abandonia. What should I do?
How do I close or exit Dosbox?

I am using Vista and dosbox 0.63. I can get qfg1 (the vga/new version) to run but I can't seem to save my game. I've tried creating extra save folders, but I always get an error saying that the current directory cannot hold anymore games. I've tried changing directories, but they either have the same problem or the game can't find them. I suspect I will have the same problem if I play all the way through and try the import feature. Please help...

Hi, the problem has to do with Windows Vista not allowing users to write directly to the C:\ drive. I'm not using Vista currently but as I understand it the game I believe has to be in the games folder under my documents. You will need to change the mount commands as well since the files will be in a different spot. I wrote the guide for XP only and I don't have Vista yet so I can't test out this for you. I plan on getting Vista in the future when compatibility issues have largely been resolved and will write separate versions of these guides, including this one, when I do.

Hey whats up. Just wanted to let everyone know the issue I had.
The file I download (the quest for glory file), when unzipped, creates a folder called:

In case you are having the same issue I did, you will either have to rename this folder to match the folder written in the extra instructions (added to the .config file)...

change qfg1 to questf~1

or vice versa...
change the instructions from questf~1

Hi the files you are referring to are from the Quest for Glory 1 VGA remake. This is a separate game also listed on Abandonia but not currently on my site (hopefully in the future). This guide is for the original release of the game.

Oops the VGA remake is also on this site in a separate guide though. The commands on this guide are correct for this version however.

Is there a version that will work with a Mac?

Hi Glenn,

I have just finished quest for glory 1 (vga) and have had no problems saving games. I cant seem to manage saving my character at the end though. Not sure how I could import it to qfg2? I am currently using windows 7! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using the most recent version of DOSBOX for Windows XP. When I press a directional button, my character for this game walks in the proper direction, but doesn't stop unless I click on screen. If I hold the button, he spazes out. In combat, he gets stuck doing actions with no sense of proper timing. Anyone know how to fix this?
