First Download & Install Dosbox on Windows:
Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)
Next: Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your hard drive in the directory C:\Games\WingCom. Simply entering this will create these folders for you.
Next: Open the Games folder then the WingCom folder within it. Locate and then run Dosbox by double clicking on the Dosbox program icon.
Next: At the the command prompt in Dosbox type "config -writeconf dosbox.conf" and then press the "Enter" key.

Next: Type "exit" to exit Dosbox.

Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.
Finally: With the dosbox config file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:
mount c c:\games\wingcom
c:
wc
Save and exit the config file when you are finished.
Now Lets Download the Game Wing Commander:
Go To: http://abandonia.com
Next: Type "Wing Commander" in the game search box in the upper right corner of the main page and press enter.
After That: Click on "Wing Commander" in the game search results column.Next: On the page that follows click on the "Get It!" button.

Finally: Click on the "Get It" button on following page and wait for your browser to give you the option to download and save the file. Click the "Save" button and choose a directory on your hard drive where you would like to save the zip file. Saving to your desktop is usually the default option and is probably the easiest place to save the file for extraction.
Now Lets Extract The Wing Commander Game File:
First: Right click on the "Wing Commander" file you downloaded to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".
Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will be asked where you would like to extract the Wing Commander files, select "C:\Games\WingCom". When you're done click "Next" again and the Wing Commander files will begin to extract.
"I've Got The Enemy In My Sights":
Double click on the Dosbox program in the "C:\Games\WingCom" folder and the game Wing Commander will launch, enjoy!

The game is running too fast to play. I have the opposite question, "how do I slow the action down?"
Hi, if you go into the dosbox config again look for a section labeled [cpu]. In that section there will be a line that will read "cycles=auto". Change this to cycles=3000. Decrease this number if the game is still to fast and you can increase it if the game runs to slow as well.
Best,
Glenn
hello,
couple of things:
-after following your directions running DOSbox doesn't run the game, however double clicking on WC does but I end up with an error message when I do this: the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f037 05 0e 02 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
-there's a wing commander installation file that I've run and it tells me 'expanded memory not detected,' then refuses to continue the installation.
any ideas?
I can get the game to work fine. The secret mission add-ons refuse to install for me. I follow the same process in dosbox to mount both directories, run the add-on install program, tell it where everything is, and then it gets stuck asking me for wing commander disk 7.
I was hoping i could just make some file copies to force the install but it seems a little more complicated than that too.
Any suggestions please.
Hi Aaron for floppy disk files they often need to be mounted as A: or B: .

Glenn
Anonymous is Dosbox loading the commands correctly (c drive etc).

I'm having a similar problem. I recently downloaded the Secret Missions for Wing Commander 1 as a zip file. I extracted it to my Wing Commander folder, selected the Secret Missions from the main menu, and was told they weren't installed. I went into the Secret Missions folder and ran the install, but it locks up when it asks for the drive that contains the Secret Missions files. In my case, it's my c: drive, but I can't type that in as an option. Does anybody have any ideas how to install the Secret Missions from the c: drive?
Hi, try extracting them into the DISK1 sub folder. I don't know where the game expects the files to be but that might be it.
Best,
Glenn
If the "Secret Missions" Zip is what I bwlieve it to be - extract to a temporary directory, then run the INSTALL program and specify the target (e.g. D:\GAMES\WINGCMDR) directory etc. The "not installed" message is due to a missing file or files in the GAMEDAT subdirectory of the installed target directory (e.g. DISK.005/6)

i have no sound on the download u gave me. and i cant seem to slow down the game play. i tryed to go and change cycles=auto, to cycles=3000 and it went the same. wat should i do?
Hi try dropping it really low to like 1000 and see if that works and move it in increments of 100 from there.
Best,
Glenn
Any chance that you'll be making a guide on how to play Wing Commander's Secret Missions expansion?
