MDK ( Murder Death Kill ) Game Free Download & Install Guide

Author: Glenn Scrima

(Please do not copy this guide. However anyone is free to link to this page.)

Note: The download of the game has been taken down at Abandonia. I am in the process of adding a new Abandonware download site to this guide as well as rewriting the guide for any changes needed. I am leaving the guide up to allow users looking to play the game some possibly useful info while I prepare to update it.

First Download & Install Dosbox on Windows XP:

Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)

Dosbox homepage
Next: Run the Downloaded Installer file and install Dosbox on your C:\ drive when asked. Finally when finished rename your Dosbox folder MDK.

Next: Open the MDK folder and then locate and run Dosbox by double clicking on the Dosbox program icon.

Next: At the the command prompt in Dosbox type "config -writeconf dosbox.conf" and then press the "Enter" key.

Next: Type "exit" to exit Dosbox.

Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.

Editing the Dosbox config file
Next: Now with the dosbox config file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:

mount c c:\mdk
c:
cd mdk
mdk

Dosbox autoexec mount commands
Now with this done we can move on to the step of optimizing Dosbox for MDK. If you decide to perform the following steps (performance tweaks) in the next section leave the config file open to make these additional changes. If not save and exit the config file. The following section is completely optional but since MDK requires a lot of computing power while using Dosbox I thought it was a relevant one. More steps can be taken then the ones described below to improve performance. However these steps below are simply ones that will disable what is unneeded to run MDK without causing any possible side effects.

Next Lets Make Some Game Performance Tweaks (Optional Step):

First:
With the dosbox config file still open scroll up to the section labeled [gus]. In this section there is a line with the command "gus=true". You will need to change this to "gus=false". When you are done it should look like this:

Gus settings
Next: Scroll down to the section labeled [speaker]. Here there are three lines with the commands "pc speaker=true", "tandy=true", and "disney=true". Change all three of these to "false". It should look like this:

Disney settings
Next: Scroll to the [dosbox] section in the config file. Change the command "memsize=" to the number 48. It should look like this:

RAM size
Finally: If you plan on using a joystick then skip this step. If not then lets also disable joystick support to get even more performance out of Dosbox. Scroll down to the [joystick] section and change the command "joysticktype=" to "none". It should look like this:

Joystick type

Now Lets Download the Free MDK Game:

Go To: http://abandonia.com

Next: Type "mdk" in the game search box in the upper right corner of the main page and press enter.

Search box
After That:
Click on MDK in the game search results column.

Search results
Next: On the page that follows click on the "Get It!" button.

Download Game
Finally:
Click on the "Get It" button on following page and wait for your browser to give you the option to download and save game the file. Click the "Save" button and choose a directory on your hard drive where you would like to save the game zip file. Saving to your desktop is usually the default option and is probably the easiest place to save the file for extraction.

Saving the zip file

Now Lets Extract The MDK Free Game Download:

First:
Right click on the "MDK (Murder Death Kill)" file you downloaded to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".

Extracting the zip file
Then: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will then be asked where you would like to save the extracted game files, select C:\MDK. After you've chosen this directory on your hard drive click "Next" again and the files will begin to extract.

Ready to Play Some MDK!:

Double click on the "dosbox" program file in the C:\MDK directory and the game Murder Death Kill will launch, enjoy!

Just download mdkd3d.exe. Better graphics and no fussing.

Hey, everything ok, but when the game runs i get the following message "Sorry, this machine is a 486 or unknown processor with insufficient performance for adequate gameplay with MDK". I have a Pentium 4!!!

It is a demanding game when it comes to Dosbox (it's emulation so it takes a lot more CPU power than if you were running DOS by itself) but I'd think your computer should be ok for it. If you happened to skip the optional step in the guide I'd recommend that to start. There is also a guide in my FAQ section that shows more ways to get Dosbox running even quicker. Let me know if these steps help.

Best,
Glenn

Hi thanks for letting me know about this. I just checked and it appears Abandonia has taken down their copy. I have checked the three other sites I usually feature as well and none of them host a copy either. I'm going to see if any of the other major Abandonware sites host a copy of the game and rewrite the sections of this guide that need to be updated. Sorry for this but I appreciate you letting me know there is now an issue with the guide.

Best,
Glenn

Just a note on Abandonia's policy regarding abandonware status. Abandonia is fully aware of the fact that abandonware is in no way legal, and that copyright holders still own the titles sites like Abandonia offer. Therefor, if a copyright holder requests it, if the game is sold (not counting garage sales), supported or (by Abandonia's own rules) the game is "younger" than a certain "age", then the game is not offered for download and if it was, the status is changed from "downloadable" to "protected". Vice versa, if a protected game is found to be abandoned again, it will again be offered for d/l.

"How do I mount a hard drive or CD-ROM drive in Dosbox?"
So does this mean that if you have the full game on CD, you can run it with DOSBOX using the methods you outlined?

I have a question:
If you have MDK on disc can you play it using DOSBOX?

For those who are stuck in the "buy it" part, just click buy it, you'll be redirected to another site, on there go to the search box on top, type MDK, go to the second result and download it.
You may need to create an account, and to create an account you need to be from the US
Sucks for me (Brazilian)

Is there another link to download the MDK game file for free?
The link given shows "BUY IT" instead of "GEt IT"
