First Download & Install Dosbox on Windows:

Go To: http://www.dosbox.com > Downloads Tab > Click the Windows version (Under the Dosbox category)

Dosbox homepage
Next:
Run the downloaded installer file and install Dosbox on your C:\ drive when asked. Finally when finished rename your Dosbox folder Dune2.

Next: Open the Games folder then the Dune2 folder within it. Locate and then run Dosbox by double clicking on the Dosbox program icon.

Next: At the the command prompt in Dosbox type "config -writeconf dosbox.conf" and then press the "Enter" key.

Next: Type "exit" to exit Dosbox.

Now: Locate and right click on the Dosbox config file. Click "open with" & select notepad.

Editing the Dosbox config file
Finally:
With the dosbox config file open scroll to the bottom. We are going to place some text below [autoexec]:

mount c c:\dune2
c:
cd dune2

Autoexec mount commands

Now Lets Download The Free Game Dune 2:

Go To: http://abandonia.com

Next: Type "Dune 2" in the game search box in the upper right corner of the main page and press enter.

Search box

After That: Click on "Dune 2" in the game search results column.

Search results
Next: On the page that follows click on the "Get It!" button.

Download game
Finally:
Click on the "Get It" button on following page and wait for your browser to give you the option to download and save the game. Click the "Save" button and choose a directory on your hard drive where you would like to save the game zip file. Saving to your desktop is usually the default option and is probably the easiest place to save the file for extraction.

Saving Dune 2 zip file

Now Lets Extract the Dune 2 Free Game Download:

First: Right click on the Dune 2 game file you downloaded to your hard drive and click on "Extract All".

Extracting zip fileThen: Click the "Next" button when the extractor launches. You will then be asked where you would like to save the extracted folder, select C:\Dune2 (make sure there is no space between dune and the number 2). After you've chosen this directory on your hard drive click "Next" again and the files will begin to extract.

Now Lets Install Dune 2:

First: Double click on the Dosbox program file and Dosbox will launch. Then type Setup and press enter. You should now be in the Dune 2 installation program.

DOS setup command
Now: Select "1" and press enter. You will be asked if you want to install Dune 2 on your hard drive. Press enter again to confirm this.

Starting setup program
Next:
You will see two options. Select the first by pressing "1".

Selecting option 1
Now: You will see a list of sound cards to choose from. You may have to play with this setting if the sound doesn't work on your computer but for now choose "Sound Blaster Pro" by pressing "3".

Choosing the sound card
Next: You will be asked if "...you want to use extended memory?". Choose "Yes" by pressing "1".

Selecting extended memory
Now: You will be asked if "...you want to use a mouse?". This comes down to personal preference so choose the one you feel you'd like best.

Next: You will be shown a summary of your settings. At the bottom of the screen you will be asked if, "...you wish to save this configuration", press "Y" and then enter. Select "2" on the "Setup Main Menu" to exit the installer. Then type "exit" to close Dosbox.

Now:
We are going to head back to the dosbox config file and add another line of code. Again its in the [autoexec] section, this time below the commands we have already added. The command is "dune2". It should look like this.

Reediting the autoexec commands
Finally:
Save and exit the config file.

Hi, you need to click on the Dosbox program. If you try running the Dune2 file by itself Vista won't be able to run it.

Glenn

Thanks for the guide. I love the game, but after I get through the first mission, I am asked some questions (about the units, missils etc) I don't know the answers, so I just press enter or type whatever and than it just kicks me out of the game! I'm back to the dos screen with C:\Dune2.

Do u know what's wrong?
thanx

Hi, what OS are you running XP or Vista?

Vista :/

Glenn Scrima said...

Do you know if you are running Vista in administrator mode? If not this can cause issues with Dosbox games. Here's a link to my guide detailing how to fix this if that is the case.

Hi, I FINALLY got the game running after a long time of frustration (I used your guide and wa-lah it works! Thanks a million :]). However, I get the same thing with the questions at the end of mission one, and even when running as admin OR actually logged in as the admin, I still get them and it closes. What the hell!! Please help.

Anonymous said...

Hi again, this is the same person as directly above. I just thought I'd mention that the questions get asked after you select the next mission (so you beat mission one and select the next region), and no matter what region/mission I select as any house I get the questions anyway. WTF?!! Reminder, this is running as admin.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi try giving administrator permission to the dosbox program itself just to make sure Vista isn't denying the program access for some reason. If this doesn't work try using an earlier version of Dosbox such as 0.71, 0.70 or 0.65.

Best,
Glenn

I uninstalled the program then re-installed it as the admin (before I installed just as a user) and it's working now. :) Thanks again for the guide!

hey glen,
i think i posted my other post to the wrong area anyway. i am having issues with the dosbox.conf file, vista and or note pad wont let me save the changes that you said need to be added, its keeps coming up with "cant crate C:/programe/dosbox.conf...etc make sure path and file name are correct" what should i do???

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi, this is a common issue with Vista and Dosbox. I have a guide which explains how to fix this (see link below). It's best to try both methods if one doesn't work, as visitors have had one work but not the other depending on their setup.

I choose yes and then it says I "Cannot create the C:\program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.conf file." the it also says " make sure the path and file name are correct" im not really sure what all that "lingo" means.. can you help??
Thanks, ryan

i am the guy right above... i figured out the saving problem.. but now i am having the problem the one person was about the questions? any pointers????
thanks ryan

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Ryan sorry for the delay in my response. When you say you are having trouble with the question what do you mean by that? Is Dosbox giving you the error or do you mean the game itself?

Tnks a lot

Glenn Scrima said...

I'm not sure of the solution but it might be worth checking the chat forum for the game on Abandonia as someone probably brought this up.

The questions are for proof that you have the booklet for the game. The text file for the book is available online. You get three chances to get the security question right or it kicks you off.

Thanks for the guide Glenn, great game!

No problem enjoy the game!

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi the installation process might be slightly different for files from another site. I would just stick to the Abandonia files from the guide to make sure you don't run into any issues.

Hi Glenn,

I've downloaded Colonization from abandonia can you add the dos box instructions so I can run & play it please?

Thanks for the instructions for Dune & Dune2 both work fine so far.

Hey Glenn, great guide.

I want to play other dos games I've downloaded now not just dune2. I don't seem to be able to "unmount" i don't even know if that is a thing dune 2 or change the cd to the other directories in the file.

I kept dune2 as my main file and just created a sub directory for TIM but even after exiting after the dune2 automatic launch I can't seem to get into TIM

pls help. I don't mind if i change it so dune doesn't auto launch. I am really not at all computer savvy but i loved the good old dos days.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi I will try to get a Colonization guide out soon.

Best,
Glenn

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Charlie, if you want to run more than one game from the same Dosbox program the best way would be to enter the commands manually for each game. That way the game won't auto launch when you open Dosbox. Is the TIM directory in the Albion folder or the games folder outside the Albion folder?

Best,
Glenn

When I closed the game...
I can't open it anymore..
How to open it again?

Anonymous said...

When I go through the config coding no config file shows in my Dune2 folder.

Suggestions?

Anonymous said...

Got past the config file issues and it works!! Even with sound!

Thanksfully, I still have the original game book (and CD for that matter) so I can get past the questions no problem.

Thanks Glen.

I think most questions are answered, and it is time to make a wish for us all.Perhaps we dont have to be really longanimous anymore and wait for the day when"they"give us not just any try of a future "dune" game, not just any modernized "emperor" or like a lot of us know ,any try of something which makes an art of similar mind, feeling, story or view or whatever,f.i.even colour to gameplay, like some game developers did,and lot people found "dune.."inside..-the reason why people know, theyr not alone with those magics which happened to us,mentioned by strange and high mentors for economy, war and glory or the spice and so on..we are not alone, and westwood or dino de laurentis corp.will turn back to us,cause they know..perhaps there should be a start f.i. wih a campaign for donations to develop..they know and we know, they do not need our money.but perhaps it makes something for them, like a background in the world.
