Sorry for the very delayed response on my part. I just updated the guide today.

When I receive the package at the start, the game leaves me with a blank black screen and then freezes...the same happens at the library...

Glenn Scrima said...

What operating system are you using (XP or Vista)?

Anonymous said...

I am using XP, and I've done everything as you wrote and tried some possible solutions with dosbox's help, but neither of them did work. Two more things: 1. when the game freezes with the black screen, and I restart with darkseed.exe, I can continue from the point I stuck earlier, but without the movie I wanna see :) (f.e. when the policeman gives me the package). 2. when I installed the game, it didn't ask for configurations, it just ran straight (I have sound with SB16 setting as dosbox's default)

Hi, it seems abandonia just uploaded a new version of the game and after downloading it and reinstalling the game I am having issues as well. I have decided to take this guide off the site for the time being until this is resolved.

Best,
-Glenn

Hi Glenn! Maybe I know the solution: remove the "read only" attribute from each file in darkseed directory, also in the sub-directory! As I see it works, but maybe partially...

Hi Glenn. I found a provisional solution: when the screen turns black, wait a few seconds (perhaps 5) and type "start", then press Start, and you'll see the cinema. Then, the screen will turn black again. One more time, wait about 5 seconds, but this time type "tos", press Start, and you'll be able to continue the game. At this time this solution is functioning in my game. Remember, after a game, type "start" and press Start to see the cinema; after the cinema, type "tos" and press Start to continue your game. Greetings.

Thanks for the tip. I'll download the game tommorow and give it a shot.

Sorry; when i wrote "press start" it means press Enter (type "start" and press Enter; type "tos" and press Enter). Sorry for tne inconvenience

I just tried it out and it seems to work perfectly. Thanks for finding this solution I certainly would have never thought of it, pretty clever. I'll update the guide hopefully tomorrow.

Glenn

Hi again! I'm sorry to say but this solution doesn't work for me. When I press start I see the movie, but after then typing "tos" and pressing enter doesn't have any effect...anyway if I type darkseed the game continues but without the object that should've been given to the avatar (f.e. package)..

kaiN':

I used this procedure in my personal desktop, and in a friend's laptop, with XP, and works perfectly. Did you wait a few seconds after typing "tos"? sometimes, it takes about 10 secs (perhaps a few more) to continue the game. Good luck

kaiN' said...

Thanks for the tip but it doesn't work either. I've noticed that if I am playing in window mode, and type start at the black screen, on the top of the window "START" appears changing "DOSBOX" on the namebar, but when I type tos nothing happens, the DOSBOX sign stays. So it seems as if tos command wouldn't exist. :)

I've followed your guide exactly and it does play the game in XP, however it is missing something important - the speech component. I see the speech files are in the Darkseed file, however they don't play. I may be the only one this happens to, but maybe you are all playing it this way.

I then downloaded the CD rip file from HOTU and burned it to a CD. It wouldn't play in DosBox, but in VDMS I heard the character's voice for the first time! (The same guy who did the Ripley's game). In all the years I've been playing this game from ripped files I didn't even know there was a speech component! There's still the glitch going downstairs where it locks, but I think it might be worth your while to download that HOTU file and see if you can tweak it or find how to access the speech files in the Abandonia download. It certainly would be worth it.

Hi Dara, I'll try to update the guide this week since this guide needs updating anyway. I might put a note next to abandonia for those who want to download their version letting visitors know that there is a difference as well.

Glenn, thanks A LOT for your step-by-step guide. I was looking after some way to play this game for ages, because it just played the intro.

I'm a H.R. Giger fanatic, and I played this game about 12,13 years ago in my old Sega Saturn.

Gonna get some memories back!

Thanks again, and congratulations for this amazing blog!

Glenn Scrima said...

Thanks I'm glad you're enjoying the game again. I wish I held onto my Saturn longer I'd love to see what it looked like on it.

Best,
Glenn

It's amazing how the old games don't die...

I've found another solution to the black screen instead of video "problem". The game was designed to start with the ds.bat file, not the exe files. start.exe is used for cutscenes, and tos.exe for the game itself. The ds.bat file automatically switches between them. So to make it play normally without having to type commands into the black screen, change your dosbox.conf file to be this:

[autoexec]
mount c c:\Darkseed
c:
ds

And remember to be patient, it can take a while switching between the scenes.

That said, I haven't figured out how to get the speech to play, and HOTU seems to be permanently down... I'd rather play the game with the speech so I'll wait for someone to post the answer :)

Hi Glenn

I am having the same problem where the game plays ok but the speech does not. Have you worked how do get it to work yet glenn?
It would be great if you can.

Thanks

Thanks for the guide! It helped me greatly. I don't hear any speech, but since the text is displayed, I don't think I am missing much. Thanks again!

There has been some technical issues with this game in Dosbox so I'm glad you have it working on your machine. I'll post here if I can iron out these issues and maybe get the speech working. Either way enjoy the game!

Glenn

I've been following all of the directions, and everything works up until the "start" sequence has ended. When I type "tos", all I get on the next screen is a bunch of multi-colored pixels. I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm using Vista 32-bit. Just wondering if someone else has had a similar problem.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi Ivon, the current version of Darkseed on Abandonia seems to have a bunch of bugs that has made it almost impossible to get it running correctly. I have since found another site that has a copy and I plan to test it and update this guide to get a working copy and instructions as this guide unfortunately no longer fully works. I will try to do this in the next week or two.

Best,
Glenn

Ivon said...

Sounds good, Glenn. I'll definitely check back to see if you get that copy from the other site to work. Btw, I actually have the CD-Rom copy of Dark Seed, and I still haven't been able to get it to work.

Glenn Scrima said...

Hi everyone, I finally rewrote the guide and added a new download site with a working copy. Enjoy playing Dark Seed again!

Glenn
